In the Algebraicist by Ian M. Banks some aliens come to earth in early human history and take a bunch of humans and human DNA and set them up all over the galaxy— get them up to speed on tech and those humans and the aliens just leave Earth alone to develop “naturally” — so when humans on earth eventually explore the galaxy some of the aliens they meet are just other humans. (this is just a minor plot point if you can imagine)So if this happened are *you* mad? Or no?

@futurebird In this question, am I one of the relocated people, or one of the ones left behind, or am I one of their descendants?

@futurebird , No! This would be awesome! I care about humanity, and want us to push ourselves off this single rock, to help protect our species from extinction.

@futurebird Nah, it's kind of cool, like "oh, some aliens set us up an old science fiction universe populated with people in unusual outfits."

@futurebird Hm... I find I'm more mystified and excited than anything. I think it's gonna be a lot of fun learning about all the cool stuff they know how to do.

@futurebird What? I missed a chance to live in the Culture instead of the worst timeline? Yeah, I'm kinda peeved at the whole notion.

@futurebird not mad. The diaspora happened in early human history, so early that I can’t know enough to trace my ancestry to those who were left behind, and, likely, further back in time, there were common ancestors among those taken and those left. It gives hope, both that humanity is not limited to a single planet, a single path, and that humanity may travel many different paths.

@futurebird Mad, no. Terrified, yes, because human history shows us that there will be few peaceful encounters in space.

@futurebird I would stop reading an unimaginative story.

@futurebird Kinda depends. When we meet them, are they all Tollan about it? Like, despite being fellow humans they mostly act like we're too *primitive* for them? Mad at them, sure. But (to switch Star ___ shows) I totally get the Prime Directive. Like, I'd be mad at the aliens apparently experimenting on humans, unless it was done super ethically and consensually, but I'd be *very* glad they didn't take it upon themselves to shape the course of human civilization in their own image.
