I am looking to install a electric car charger at home. The recommended charger requires an active internet connection and (most likely) will constantly connect to servers in other countries - no sane person wants that. What does #fediverse recommend for charger, with local API access, #homeassistant support and so on.#askfedi

@seleaMost chargers use OCPP as a protocol, you may have to install a CSMS (charge station management service) on a server at home to get local API access easily.

@selea Please note that I sold my last car two years ago, and I havea little business with some national charger networks (yea, mismatching positions 🙂).Those being said, all you need in a good charger is a reliable and preferably replaceable contactor and as little electronics as possible. All "smartness" you need should stay in the car, especially in home charger scenarios. Your local market might differ but here the best contactor suppliers are Siemens and to a lesser extend ABB.

@selea I just bought a cheap charging station without any "smartness" at all because I don't trust the manufacturers to handle IT Security. To be honest it's the same with the cars, it's scary how they "need" to be connected all the time, cars have been running just fine disconnected for hundreds of years and a different motor doesn't change that.

@sebulon @selea How much is 'cheap' for a home charging station? I don't (yet?) own an electric vehicle but it's good to know the basic outline of costs for when I start considering one. âš¡

@selea @mihor Which one you get deeply depends on the charging capabilities of your car. My Nissan Leaf e.g. can only charge 1 phase 16A so getting anything beefier than that would be a complete waste of money. As for the brand it's good 'ol cheap ass DELTACO 😄

@seleaI guess (from a 0 knowledge) somewhat you will be tight to the vendor of your vehicle ? hard to byss pass that connection because it will (I've no clue) required to check battery health ? some other stuff ? ... idk I don't like electric vehicles because of that and other things :/I'm interested to know details I'll keep an eye on this toot to learn about it.

@selea you go with smart one if you want to modulate the charge current : to not overload main fuse or to track your solar production and prevent import from the grid when charging. If you have #homeassistant there is an #ocpp hacs module, connect the charger to it and feel free to cut internet access to the charger, having it receive instructions from HA. I think only firmware upgrades may then require big bad internets.

@selea On the contrary, sane people will want an active internet connection so that the charger can operate at times that are optimised for cleanest energy, e.g. (for the US) https://www.enelxway.com/us/en/solutions/juicenet-green

@selea And?Your original assertion was that no sane person would want a connected charger. That's simply obnoxiously asinine.
