Folks who might be looking to move from Windows to Linux: another option, if it’s financially feasible for you and you don’t want to mess with installing Linux, is to sell your Windows machine and buy a Linux one.Yep, they exist.Folks like @starlabs in the UK, @tuxedocomputers in the EU, and @system76 in the US sell Linux machines that just work out of the box.#windows #linux #recall

@aral @starlabs @tuxedocomputers @system76 +1 for Tuxedo, they are awesome. They are also quite inexpensive. And Tuxedo both upstreams their patches as well as provides userland packages for a variety of distros. Great stuff.

@AstaMcCarthy @mauricepinzon @starlabs @tuxedocomputers @system76 Unless I’m missing something, frame.work doesn’t come with Linux pre-installed and running (it only does that for Windows). You can install Linux yourself on the DIY model so it’s more for enthusiasts.

@aral worth mentioning https://minifree.org/ ( @libreleah ) as somewhere to buy pre installed machines. Not bought one myself yet, but thinking of getting one when I have time to play with a BSD

@alx I’m sure some folks would disagree but I really think Fedora Silverblue is the best distribution right now (it’s what I use myself):https://fedoraproject.org/atomic-desktops/silverblue/Additional bonus: you never have to worry about updates. They just work.

@aral @AstaMcCarthy frankly, it should. I went from Tuxedo to Framework for my daily driver and it's been a wonderful experience.(It does also feel like I have to do less wrangling keeping Linux alive on my Framework as I had to on my Tuxedo, it "Just Works™" but this is purely anecdotal/subjective

@aral @starlabs @tuxedocomputers I can vouch for @system76 I have had a Pangolin laptop of theirs for years, and reviewed a few of their laptops. I even have two of their keyboards one for the Windows box I use for OBS to stream as some plugins still need Windows, and the other keyboard for a self built PC I use with System76 Pop!_OS for my workstation and gaming on Linux twitch streams I run (and plan to expand to Youtube and Owncast eventually). I also daily @purism Librem 14 with @QubesOS

@aral @starlabs @tuxedocomputers @system76 Or @frameworkcomputer if you're willing to do buy a DIY option. (They do support Ubuntu and Fedora offically though and the fingerprint sensor works on Linux unlike many other options, including from Tuxedo.)

@aral I've had good luck with ThinkPenguin, for both desktops and laptops. Their computers are set up to run without any proprietary drivers, so they can run distros that are totally libre, as well as more mainstream distros such as Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, openSUSE, etc. Their product pages give a lot of spec details, and their user support via email is quite good. https://thinkpenguin.com/My experience with a 2020 #Purism Librem 15 was not good - died 2 months past warranty.

@aral @starlabs @tuxedocomputers @system76 There are also pinebooks and slimbook and some Dell laptops that comes with Ubuntu and purism. But anyway it's easier to install Linux in 5 min in most computers.

@aral @starlabs @tuxedocomputers @system76 If I were to switch to Linux it would be better for me to switch jobs first: there aren't many structural engineering software for Linux. I could dual boot, but I tried it already, it was a hassle for me. In the end I ended up stopping using the Linux partition, removing it and extending the Windows partition. Time to learn programming.

@aral @starlabs @tuxedocomputers @system76 For those who don't want to part with funds, I'd say I've never had much of an issue with a used Dell. I'm still running from an install on a prior Dell with Fedora 17. I've upgraded twice a year since and moved hardware by copying hard drive image to new to me machine (now my fourth). Even migrating from BIOS/MBR style boot to UEFI. So I've never tried the Silverblue variant of Fedora. I give a month after fedora release b4 upgrade.
