@Terry I'm beginning to think Zelenski does not care a lot about his troops.In the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), Paraguay lost around 90% of its adult male population. Later, around 70% of the overall population died of famine and disease too. Today, Paraguay is famous for its brown criminals and bootleg DVDs. Half of them are in Ireland. Up until now the government has been giving them €230 a week, PLUS €850 a month towards accommodation, PLUS free healthcare, PLUS free food, PLUS they don't have to insure or pay taxes on their cars (most of them road tripped here), PLUS none of that is means tested and they're allowed to work, PLUS they're allowed to vote and run in local elections (local government controls most of the handouts).The government is proposing to reduce that €230 a week (the rest remains in place) and there's uproar. All the NGOs are calling it a human rights violation.

@Red_Hat @Terry @Rasterman Way back when I was a baby accountant, I worked in a tax office and we paid a guy who was an Iraq veteran to stand in front of our building wearing a statue of liberty costume and wave at people. Poor guy served almost a full term in Iraq but then he started hearing voices and they booted him out with no benefits. He never saw any action but was assigned to guard some isolated oil field with like 4 other soldiers who were all the same rank. Said it was the most boring time of his life. It did in many ways. Our state industries were hopelessly corrupt and inefficient. It used to take years to get a phone line installed, people bribed politicians to get it done and buildings typically advertised how many they had available in office ads. After TE was opened up to competition things improved massively. Same for electricity supply and other areas.The main problem is that a lot of our economically liberal windfalls came from inviting tech and pharma companies to base themselves here, and they now excercise an inappropriate level of control over our government and import huge numbers of "guest" workers who become eligable for citizenship in only a couple of years.
