math, I imagine? calc 2 is a big weedout coursea lot of people get culled by freshman chemistry but at that point are you even really in the engineering program yet

@deprecated_ii statics was the big one for mech engineers at my school. Didn't help I took ochem 1 at the same time tbh

@deprecated_ii It seems like, if they can get into the first engineering class, they most likely will graduate. Many universities allocate money to departments based on number of graduates.

My university had this one second year computer science course on systems modelling and proofs that was such a massive filter (only 30% of students would pass it). It used to filter out most of the women who were in the first year subjects.

@deprecated_ii I had a roommate whose father was a nuclear engineer and he wanted to be just like him. Unfortunately the kid was a fucking retard and was still living in the sorms taking 200 level courses a year after I graduated, swearing he'd be accepted into the engineering program when he passed the prereq he'd attempted six times. WTF LOL

@Elliptica @deprecated_ii absolutely not a joke. I never ran into this with Indians but my god I had some Chinese professors that were IMPOSSIBLE to understand. I managed to get though the classes but I had to purely get into from the textbook and couldn't ask questions because any answer given was indecipherable.

@RustyCrab @Elliptica @deprecated_ii I had a Chinese professor that was impossible to understand, it was too late to drop the class when I bailed, I was surprised to discover I passed with a B despite stopping attending classes, he gave everyone a good grade so they wouldn't write a bad review of him

For chemical sciences, it would be usual suspects: Calculus, Physics and Physical Chemistry / Thermodynamics. As a rule of thumb only 30-40% will graduate at best, of which only half actually knows something in best case scenario. The truth is that many people shouldn't go there in the first place..

@RustyCrab @deprecated_ii Yeah, I've had it all. German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian. Of all of them, Chinese and Indians were the worst, but Indians were the worst of the worst. The Chinese guy confused me a lot because he would say things like "Do your duty" which meant "Do your derivative". All of the Indian guys had a superiority complex and would talk non-stop in a monotone "bibbidy bobbidy" voice. It was exhausting and infuriating at the same time.

My lecturers mostly just read out the textbook anyhow. It was such a scam. I'd rather have just been given a syllabus and turned up for the exam.

Sometimes when I look up math or programming videos I genuinely can't tell if they're speaking English or Hindi until at least five minutes in.

@Eiregoat @deprecated_ii In really hate that Indian math videos have largely replaced native English speakers on Youtube. Because yeah, they'll even switch languages mid video. Even if they don't switch, you'll hear nonstop honking in the background.

@Eiregoat @RustyCrab @deprecated_ii That happened to me in grad school. My teachers would talk to the chalk board. I learned nothing from them.

At least in that case there's some effort. When they're just reading out the book it's a bit insulting... l already know how to read. Is there not going to be any value-added?Although technically that is the root of "lecture".

@Elliptica @Eiregoat @RustyCrab @deprecated_ii Had one lecturer who wrote circuit configurations and equations on the board, without explaining anything. Whenever we asked her a question, she would default "I will explain at the end"; she never did.To this day, I don't understand transistors because of heavily accented foreign lecturers.

@Eiregoat @RustyCrab @deprecated_ii I think it's probably also because they didn't know it well enough themselves. When you reach a high enough, what you are learning is the last thing they learned. Your confusion is approximately the same as theirs with this material.
