Another thrifting score, this time a mostly working Laserdisc player and several discs. I’ve never found one for sale in person before and it was pretty cheap, I couldn’t resist

It appears the tracking circuit isn’t working right and can’t stay locked onto the disc very well as it spins up. I think I’ve got that worked out with the help of the repair manual and some control systems knowledge from college that I haven’t really put to any use until now

More testing required to confirm tracking is fixed. Now I just need to figure out why it doesn’t try to slow the disc down when stopping and just dumps it in the tray instead (which sounds horrible and probably scratches the disc)

Alright, I figured this one out too: the rubber on the disc spindle is totally dried out and has no stick left. So when the breaking circuit gets engaged the spindle stops instantly while the disc just keeps spinning with incredible inertia. The player seeing that the spindle is stopped assumes it's safe to raise the tray and eject the disc which then results in horrible noises.

Anyone know how to rejuvenate the rubber on a Laserdisc player's spindle? Sticky tape on the disc worked fine to diagnose the problem but I need a real fix
