I actually got lucky finding a film camera at the thrift store: this early ‘80s Minolta point-and-shoot for only $3. Plus it takes standard AA batteries instead of some exotic lithium cell so it’s still actually cheap! Like other cameras of its kind it will beep at you but it goes a step further: it will actually use words to describe what a bad photographer you are and how you’re fucking up your shot. It’s sounds like the warnings airplanes give pilots right before they crash: a couple beeps followed by a simple two word message, like “load film” (you idiot!).On the technical side it features a very early and these days pretty rare type of autofocus system. As far as I can tell, it is a fully open-loop system: the electronic range finder determines the distance but it does not move any of the optics to verify it was right. When you press the shutter button the lens snaps back to the determined focus and the shutter fires. The winder then returns the lens to the fully forward, close focus position. In practice it makes autofocus seem really fast since it doesn’t do any hunting, it just goes for it. It reminds me of AI: infinite confidence and dubious accuracy. Besides fuck it, with a 35mm lens it’s probably close enough and your dumb ‘80s ass is probably shooting directly into the sun anyway.#BelieveInFilm #ShittyCameraChallenge
