As a New York City native, currently living in New Jersey, I should really visit the Statue of Liberty at some point in my life ...

@ncommander Isn't NJ just like New York City's backyard?Btw, are you Italian in heritage?

@ddlyh honestly, it took me until I started traveling in my 20s to realize that most cities don't have one of the de facto capitals of the world in its backyard ....

@sayartyler its more "if New York is the World's Capital, then New Jersey is the World's Toxic Waste Dump".It's also where the light at the end of the tunnel leads. We proudly host more federal superfund sites per capita than any other place in the country by a *wide* margin. As for me, I'm the child of third generation Italians, and a Cuban exile born in the United States.Half of my cultural got embargoed, and the other half has faded into English :/

It's always fasciating seeing where American and British/Crown English have diverged. I've spent enough time in Canada to be able to spot differences between thoses of us north/south of the 49th parallel. That said, there's a fair number of people who say the US system of retirement and 401ks belongs in a superfund site :/(we do have social security, but its a system that rather badly needs reform)

@ncommander In the city near my home town there is a castle a lot of people of my region never visited, and it is an important historic place! And then, I spend 5 days in the us and I visited the Statue of Liberty. I think is a sort of "Is there, it never go away, I have stuff to do, I will go there tomorrow...."

@akiran_n TBH, a lot of is that the Statue of LIberty was closed to tourists for many years after 9/11.Since then, I"ve largely lost my tolerance for queuing in lines to see attractions, but I feel like this is one of those things I probably should do just to tick it off the list.

@ncommander My visit was part of an organized tour, so lines was expected. And was in November 2019. Nothing happened after 😅

@ncommanderIt's hard to remember to go somewhere when you can go at any time. I still haven't been to the art gallery in town and it's been there 20 years or so! It's threatened with closure so I should really go while I can...
