It's been a great weekend at the Festival for Portable Computing. Thank you so much to everyone who came along.I also gained a Revo (dead, of course) and became the custodian of a Geofox!#Psion #retrocomputing

I'm going to take a break from retrocomputing for a couple of weeks. A tough call, because the conversations I've had this weekend have inspired me so much! But my mental health needs to take priority. I need to pause, take a step back, breathe. Then I'll work out my next steps.I also want to take time to think about the way in which I approach... *gestures* all this. I've given myself some big tasks to do. For me to get them done, they need to be fun and useful, not draining and stressful.

I spend far too much time worrying about what other people think of what I'm doing. "Is this interesting enough?" "Will anyone use this?" "Am I boring people?" "Am I doing this right in other people's eyes?"This needs to matter less to me, because it doesn't help. These are my projects that I'm going to do my way. Yes, that's subjective, but most of the time so are other people's concepts of "doing it right." If it turns out I am doing it objectively wrong, I want to learn that for myself.

@thelastpsion There will always be people who nag about everything, but for /me/ the things you post are absolutely great to read about!

@jan Thank you! And that's what I also need to remember - some people (like you) just like the stuff I do, and I shouldn't have to worry. 😊

@zxm I must admit, I'm not its biggest fan - early EPOC32 really doesn't work well with a trackpad! But the PCMCIA port is very handy, and I like the larger screen.

@thelastpsion I hear you on this, 100%. Social media is perverse like that: having a following can be energizing and give you faith in what you're doing, but there's a point where it feels like having shareholders/critics breathing down your neck. For what it's worth, I think everything you're doing is fascinating. I don't know much about retro engineering, but I really like seeing what goes into exploring old technology.Hope you get a chance to recharge/refocus.

@thelastpsion If you have fun you're doing it right regardless of how interesting or useful what you do is. Even just your passion alone is inspiring. Nothing you post is boring, no matter what you accomplish or share.Take care.

@csilverman Thank you! You're totally right about social media. There's a big part of me that wants people to see what I'm doing - partly for outreach, but also for validation. But focusing on the latter really screws you up and can pull you in directions that don't fit with what you really want to do. I often think, "Maybe I should write a game?" Or, "Should I make some cool hardware?" But it would only be for show, and not really what *I* want to do.

@thelastpsion “interesting enough”? Well you’ve got the world’s finest PDA OS running in emulation on Haiku, and a plan to modernise the development tool chain. Could it be more interesting?! :) Glad you had a great weekend.
