I often brag on tumblr about how "on the fediverse I never have to ask people for image descriptions, why is tumblr so terrible at this?" etc. But, I've made the mistake of sharing a few images without descriptions recently! I was lulled into thinking it was not a problem.Just FYI I'm going to get strict again about not sharing undescribed images. (You should too, it keeps the feed readable.) If you forget? If this is new? Don't feel bad, just stop doing that.https://www.tumblr.com/aspirationatwork/750857131588304896

@futurebird better drafting features might help? I try to nearly always write/boost with alt text. on other accounts I’m less strict, because I don’t want to force everyone.

@futurebird I’ve got the setting on my client to stop me from posting without a description. I wish there was one for boosting without a description too.

@futurebird one time when my image was text heavy I really didn't want to have to rewrite it in the alt text :/But other than that I love this about Mastodon

@semitones there is built-in OCR in the web app, and it's a life saver.

@promovicz Entering alt text is miserable, I can't even see what I'm typing depending on what app I use. The text entry window often feels like an afterthought. And exception is the mastodon web app, which even has a "feature" (OCR!) to help you make the description.

@futurebird @promovicz It is definitely interesting to see how the presence of alt text varies based on the app used: https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/impact-of-fediverse-clients-on-the-use-of-alt-text/

@stefan @promovicz This is super interesting... I wonder to what extent this reflects "culture" of different user groups... and to what extent it's the UI making things easier or harder...

@futurebird @promovicz So I only looked at mastodon.social's local timeline, (see the Methodology section for an explanation), so that's kind of accounted for.But yes, it is also very interesting to see the difference between communities, eg: https://mastodon.social/@AltTextHealthCheck/112467699732404812A follow-up study could also compare some of the more prominent communities, see if the stats hold up.

@futurebird @promovicz Alt-text was never a habit for me until Mastodon, both for UI reasons and social pressure reasons. And I discovered a third reason: I sometimes struggle to construct sentences saying what I mean, and alt-text is good practice.

@futurebird @stefan @promovicz As a #phanpysocial user, the UI makes a big difference. If you want something to happen, make it easy. Phanpy makes it obvious and pretty easy.

@futurebird @promovicz I never did alt-text before coming to Mastodon, but Mona makes it simple enough. It’s a small chore but it’s also rewarding for me, because it’s strengthening my ability to translate visual images into words, which has always been a weak point for me.

@futurebird @stefan @promovicz In my experience it is the UI/UX of the app. Adding alt text on my Mac (web or Mona) is much simpler. Also, you need to type and possibly edit a lot of text and so a physical keyboard makes it easier to do. Editing in iOS is a PITA

@futurebird @promovicz Gotta say, entering alt text on the web app using a full computer feels like the deluxe experience of alt texting.I can even look at both the picture and the text while writing it.I just skip posting images till I can get back to that.

@futurebird I sometimes forget too. I notice that when I post an image from my iphone's photo app, I cannot add alt text until after I post the image and then edit. And then I get distracted and forget for an hour or two...or three...until I realize my post hasn't gotten any attention. 😅The fedi keeps you honest! 🥰If I post from the Ivory app, I can add alt text right away. So I am trying to be more cognizant of where I post from. It helps my ADHD/long covid addled brain.

@futurebird The one time I asked for helped with alt text, because I did not have the vocab necessary to describe a graph correctly, I got two amazing responses that probably took quite a bit of time to write. People here can be very generous of their knowledge and time.

@futurebird The online bookseller, Libro.fm #Librofm, that is supportive of Indie bookstores, and sells their books without DRM, has made it their policy to add text descriptions to all the images it posts, going forward.
