I mean, if you're going to take the whole "the grinder is the most important part of the equation" thing seriously, why not prove it. ;) Rancilio Stile grinder paired up with a Breville Bambino Plus. The PF almost sort of works in the Stile's PF holder. 7.1sec gives 17.5g dose.cc @espresso

@coffeegeek @espresso I've never been able to trust grinder dosage so I always weigh each dose and put it in the hopper instead of keeping the hopper full of beans

@lawyerjsd @coffeegeek @espresso when I owned a cafe that was our method too. Every day lots of single dosages weighed out into little cups. Seems tedious but every shot pull was almost identical

@lawyerjsd @feld @espresso I am no fan of single dosing. I like accurate grinders with zero retention that can grind on demand. This is why my main home espresso grinder is a Baratza Sette 270wi. On demand. Zero retention. Accurate to .1g doses.

@coffeegeek @feld @espresso And how many shots do you pull in a day? I’m pulling 2-3 shots. It’s just not enough to have my coffee sitting open to the air for 3-4 days.

@lawyerjsd @feld @espresso For our home machine, only 2-3 doubles a day.In our lab, as much as 50 or more doubles pulled on some days. I have on demand grinders in both spaces. I still prefer them over single dosing. The hoppers hold about 3 days' worth of coffee, or enough for about 12 double shots.

@coffeegeek @feld @espresso I don't know. Maybe I just got used to single dosing, which helps since my grinder is a df83 (version 1, Italmil burrs, camperista mod for the chute and declumper).

@lawyerjsd @feld @espresso Honestly tho, if you own a Sette 270Wi for espresso (I bought mine for the home setup), you'll wonder why anyone single doses ;) It's got an Acaia scale, built right in! :) And IMO, it's still one of the top conical burr grinders for espresso on the market today, in terms of output.

@coffeegeek @lawyerjsd @feld @espresso alright, I figure you'll have an opinion on this. Is covering the hopper in tinfoil a reasonable way to keep my coffee fresh enough? It feels simultaneously like overkill and inadequate compared to single dosing, but I quite like it.

@iris @coffeegeek @lawyerjsd @espresso I thought it was mostly oxygen, hest, and moisture that were the real enemies. I assume natural sunlight would have an effect because UV is powerful, but I can't find a single study that talks about light causing "photodegredation" or whatever to coffee beans so I consider that to be a myth until I get more data

@feld@bikeshed.party @iris@neuromatch.social @coffeegeek@flipboard.social @lawyerjsd@mastodon.social @espresso@a.gup.pe Tinted hoppers are fairly common, but even if it's paranoia, UV does a number on pretty much everything. It would track that minimizing beans to it would make sense. Wrapping the hopper in foil might be a bit much, but keeping it out of direct light only makes sense.

@feld@bikeshed.party @iris@neuromatch.social @coffeegeek@flipboard.social @lawyerjsd@mastodon.social @espresso@a.gup.pe Yeah. Too many variables there too. Shrug, if yer spending nearly $20 for 10 ounces of beans, that were roasted within the last week or so, it's reasonable paranoia to keep it at its best. Treat it like a green bottled beer that skunks easily. Keep it out of light and away from the usual suspects. Light is probably pretty low on the totem pole of deleterious influences, but ritual protections can be amusing. If you're grinding through "cheap" beans i'd care less.
