#Matrix technically supports voice calls, but there hasn't been a single time this went without issues of disconnecting or just never connecting at all. Why is this so hard, when every other modern chat application has no issues whatsoever?!

@tyil I've tackled this issue to some level in a private synapse instance, you have to setup a whole different service to act as a relay between users, it's cumbersome, most likely to have issues, especially behind a NAT with port forwarding, the latency is unbearable, so most admins just don't bother. And to my knowledge it doesn't tell you when the server you are calling to didn't setup said service, thus the voice call would end up in failure for reasons other than network issues.

@tyil video & audio chat is still extremely dependant on low latency and high bandwidth, I don't want to read the specs but I wouldn't be surprised if they're transferring that stream using JSON over HTTPS. It's one thing sending shitposts and reaction gifs to your friends, it's whole another thing to see and hear each other in acceptable quality. Distributed homeservers? It's like forklifting with a fork. Never seen done.

@ika@emacs.ch All I know is #Matrix promotes the idea that you can do voice calls, and it's one big massive shitshow. There's problems every time. I had no such problems with #Signal, #Jitsi, or #BigBlueButton. If Matrix can't do it for whatever technical decision, that's fine, but then they simply shouldn't pretend like they have this feature in the first place. Now its just another negative to add to the massive list for Matrix.

@tyil On which Server?I use Matrix on my own synapse server with my TURN server nearly every day without problems 🤷

@fuesstest@social.tchncs.de I'm using matrix.org, like most people. I'm unwilling to host software that's so badly written on my own hardware, and the person I'm trying to call with doesn't even know how to install their own OS, so I doubt they're going to be able to set it up either. Great that you're masochistic enough to run your own #Synapse server, but the vast majority of #Matrix users are not.

@tyil certainly improvable but it worked fairly ok in most cases when I used it. I assume most systems you're comparing with are centralised which probably makes things a lot easier.

@h3nn3s@fosstodon.org It doesn't matter what I'm comparing it with, if #Matrix' design cannot do this reliably, then they shouldn't be promoting it as if they can.The person I'm trying to call with is not in IT, she doesn't know nor care how this stuff works, she sees a phone icon, so she thinks this system supports voice calls. It doesn't. Pretending it does rather than fixing it proper is not going to make Matrix more popular.

@tyil well that's an entirely different point than in your original post

@h3nn3s@fosstodon.org What? My point remains the same: while in theory #Matrix supports voice calls (it has the button, and it does make a ringing noise when you click it), in practice it really doesn't. The majority of calls get stuck at "connecting", and the few that go through disconnect later on anyway.I have not had this issue with any competing chat applications such as #Signal, so clearly this can be done, just not in Matrix.

@tyil your point, as written in your original post, was why do calls never work on Matrix when they work on other apps?To which I responded that calls work mostly ok in my personal experience and that the other apps you're referring to probably use an architecture that makes call signaling less complicated. To which you then responded that the specific alternatives didn't matter and that Matrix shouldn't advertise calls when they are not reliable which is a different argument.

@h3nn3s@fosstodon.org My point is, as written in my original post, that #Matrix does not, in practice, support voice calls, even though they proudly claim they do.
