The antidote to AI destroying the web is to strengthen human connection and to make those connections a fundamental part of the open web. Quickly.

@mike@flipboard.social Slightly off topic but with Google abdicating it's role in search does that leave the door open for Bing? I know Bing is still the but of many jokes and Microsoft is racing towards everything AI along with everyone else, but will someone in Redmond sense the opportunity?

@mike@thecanadian.social I think Bing is also all-in on AI. We're going to need a totally new way to discover and navigate the web that is fundamentally better than a search engine. I believe trustworthy people recommending quality content to others who share an interest will be a fundamental part of the solution.

@mike I agree however the web is already broken nowadays with walled garden platform and ads everywhere. AI content is just an addition to the enshittification. People and new ideas are the key!

@uriel @mike@thecanadian.social Yes I've used it and I think it's where Google and Bing are headed. Perplexity is essentially forcing Google to move much faster. OpenAI will soon release something similar. All paths lead to the same result: subsume all the content on the web in order to satisfy the search on site and minimize the need to link out to the web.

@mike@flipboard.social @mike@thecanadian.social Bing is already completely full with LLM-generated “summaries” of web pages in the results. Summaries that are often completely wrong.

@mike @zachleat I’ve thought a lot on this topic lately, specifically how AI content is inherently inauthentic, and how it is emerging on top of an internet era rampant with personal brand influencers, aggressive levels of irony, and disinformation. Actual authentic human connection is a refreshing breath of fresh air in contrast. The open and indie web movement is exactly this authenticity but there is definitely more to do to bridge the gaps and expand access to people who are not web geeks.

@mike make it simple and quick: request a change!Use the GDPR, use their Common-Sense, use some other pressure method.Only with a possibility to react will I trust that the web page has a human behind it.If we all do this routinely and it works, we’have an #agentfulweb.
