       @mos_8502 in the retrocomputing community you can say some of the wildest shit like "I want to use a TRS-80 to control mechanical card displays to play a game of Tetris" and they're just like "that's rad as hell." And if you follow that up with "I don't know anything about programming or electronics", they'll reply with "right on man, sounds like a great opportunity to learn something new; here's some great resources, reach out if you have any questions"

       @mos_8502 it’s true. I’ve never heard “that’s stupid” from people into retro gear.

       @aeberbach @mos_8502 Except when it’s followed by: ‘ – I love it!’

       @proedie @aeberbach @mos_8502 The more stupid the idea, the more lovable. Because breakthroughs come from seemingly stupid ideas.

       @Nathaniellockhart @mos_8502 I met people in the Commodore Hawaii User Group (CHUG) many decades ago when I handed over to them my collection of Commodore VIC-20 and C64 computers, peripherals, etc.One member was writing a realtime stock trading system on his C64 in 6510 Assembler. I have no idea how it turned out. Since the C64 could only do 300baud serial, I doubt it was very close to realtime!

       @mos_8502 I think the exceptions list is short enough to maintain by “editing host files” if that makes sense. And I agree. What’s funny is that what got me seriously into the hobby wasn’t watching the bald man from Texas, but rather buying some stuff from a collector in Sacramento like 6 years ago and chatting for a few hours. Super positive experience, and I thought he was just some dude from Facebook Marketplace who needed to downsize until someone described him in a blog post 2 weeks ago.

       @mos_8502 the guy had a really wild sounding situation with his collection, and he was definitely a bit on the eccentric side of the Spectrum, but that’s fine. He got me excited about the hobby.Turns out, I met one of the founders of VCF, Sellam Ismail, and didn’t even know it. I know there’s some controversy over VCF and Sellam’s … not quite, but kinda … hoarding, and the loss of rare stuff due to nonpayment of rent, but he was still a cool dude to talk with.

       @mos_8502 a nice example of this came up over here in the UK a couple of years ago. A chap who runs a relatively small but well-loved YouTube channel where he “Fixes Stuff” had a house fire. He lost everything. The very next day, there was a fundraiser going, starting in his Patreon community but quickly spreading throughout the UK retro community. In a few days, it raised enough money to get him back on his feet.
