I think my preference for IM might be going to #Deltachat for now. I dislike that Signal wants a phone number and is centralized and won't let F-Droid build and distribute a client. Also, I've been using Matrix and operating a server for years and I was a fool it's bad and I want to quit.Deltachat works with any email account and uses it for everything, it's basically E2EE chat over IMAP and SMTP using a subset of OpenPGP. It's simple, FOSS, works fine, has stickers!https://delta.chat/fr/

The only immediate drawback that comes to mind is that it's not made for larger groups, like with hundreds of members. Groups are basically old-school mailing lists but encrypted, so no moderation either, and it becomes CPU intensive to encrypt for a hundred+ of recipients. Also the UI is very similar to Telegram but with fewer features.Telegram got us with their very good client and fun features but we have to go away. Actually we should never have went there knowing who was funding it.

@Hiro I wish Mailman3 list server could get autocrypt support. Then all the group members would only need to encrypt with the single list server address. We'd have all the moderation tools, too.

@Hiro I also don't like Matrix and prefer email & Delta Chat, but curious what did you not like about Matrix?

@Adam Hmm doesn't this defeat centralization and E2EE to have one central authority that encrypts for every member?Though I guess that would still be better than a Discord server for large public communities.

@Hiro It wouldn't have to be just one. Anyone can host a list server. Maybe the functionality could even be added to the ChatMail server software. But yeah, I guess it would be adding a single point of failure to large group chats. Hmm.

@Hiro I see! Yeah, 73Gb = yikes! My server I use for Delta Chat uses about 200Mb RAM, a few Gb storage, and costs $11/year. So good!

@foxy I just installed Signal 7.6.2 and the 2nd screen after asking for phone & contacts access was a field requiring a phone number. How did you make an account without a phone number?
