Google Docs is handy for editing your copy. However, Google Drive 1) uses your data to build their AI, and 2) is subject to lockdown based on their censorship.Once again, if you don't want to shell out for Scrivener, I recommend Calmly Writer. It's a stripped-down markup editor, a little more sophisticated than Notepad. Save your work in a variety of file types. Free or $11. @QuanZillan@thicc.horse 2 instances on fedi have been forcefully closed due to fairly tame images. one of them had their instance deleted out from under them with no prior notice, and woem.men had been asked to delete the content otherwise they'll close her account. the woem.men inscedent image is posted below, I feel safe posting this because if anyone complains it's laughable. they are also hosting german nazis intentionally.

If they did they wouldn't keep stuff there.

@eris@akkoma.meows.gay @aborigen@sizeriot.com Allow me to suggest something to make up for the miscommunication.There's many alternative things you can do, especially when it comes to important files like work.The simplest way to be sure you don't permanently lose important things is to back them up. Aside how shady google is files might be lost in good faith. IIRC in their TOS they had for a long time that errors may happen and if they lose your files it's not on them. Cloud storage is just some computer somewhere, computers can break. I would keep local backups even if I had my files on a server I own, which brings me to the next point, having your own cloud isn't too expensive now, there's also a lot of documentation for it. I recommend nextcloud personally.Lastly, follow the 3 2 1 rule:Keep three copies of everything, the original and two backups.Use two different types of media.Keep 1 copy off site.Meaning, have the original and a copy with you, plus have a copy somewhere else so that if your computer catches on fire bringing the external drive with backups with it you still have the copy off site.

@xrpz Anything stored on Google Drive is subject to censorship and block. I was using it both for the clean editing interface in Docs and to share manuscripts with clients. For now, I have to transfer files through email (which, again, means getting away from Gmail).

@aborigen @xrpz You don't have to, actually, cloud services, including some for text editing, do exist without Microsoft or Google.Just to mention one popular option: https://cryptpad.fr/If it's about a complete office, OnlyOffice has a focus on cloud service and has also worked on including AI tools if that's your thing (for me it was a reason to head for LibreOffice).There is really no need to turn to Google for exchanging files.
