Finding it surprisingly difficult to get worked up about the google anti-fraud nightmare surveillance robot today. 10 years ago I would already be on the phone to my senator, but after a decade of helping folks out post-compromise and just generally following the infosec news, I am tired of how privacy activists just … don’t engage with the very real threats that these very problematic tools are addressing. Basic account security is a total nightmare for laypeople and it’s getting worse.

Like, don’t get me wrong, it shouldn’t exist and if it does exist there needs to be a whole regulatory apparatus to prevent it from storing unnecessary amounts of data and harsh criminal penalties for failing to adhere to those regulations. But I can’t just pretend that this is some kind of sinister power grab that isn’t addressing a real problem.

@glyph uh oh, do we need to call up a big gilded frame picture of Ben Franklin's "deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" quote? :)

There’s an entire genre of youtube video where a guy arranges to be a target of a gift-card scam and trolls the scammer. When you do the math on the way such a channel works, how the youtuber manages to be the randomly-selected target of such a scam so regularly as to make reliable income from the content produced thereby, the sheer scale of this problem comes into focus. It’s not a few gangs ripping off the occasional retiree, it’s an entire global economic sector.

@zzzeek I don’t want to hear Ben’s opinions until he has set up a venmo account for all his mistresses and has maintained disciplined emoji-free opsec with their payments for at least 6 months. And he needs to set up the MFA *himself*, no hints

@zzzeek there’s a bunch of “AI” in there too, and honestly I didn’t read it very deeply, but I could recite the point/counterpoint of the ensuing Discourse in my sleep by now
