I’ve finally got the MFM emulator working properly so I can relive AT&T’s gigantic misstep in entering the UNIX hardware market. The 3B3 is a dreadful computer, but I have a fondness for it that I can neither explain, nor justify.

@twylo It certainly *looks* the part 😍 Portrait monitor (like they should be!), keyboard with the control key in the right place, and 80s PC beige as far as the eye can see.

@twylo The 3B2 was a fantastic computer! Ok, very slow IO. Otherwise excellent.I briefly adminned a room full of them at AT&T around 1989, and then got one for myself a year or two later. I had a friend give mine a leopard skin paint job:

@twylo - Throwback. I vaguely remember using one of those for class involving assembly programming in the 80's.

@twylo @SDF I administered two 3B2/400s for AT&T Japan in the late 1980s. They ran really well and never crashed. We had quite a few simultaneous users too.

@twylo Upon seeing the portrait monitor I immediately assumed it was a Xerox Alto!

@penguin42 "Dreadful" is a bit of playful hyperbole, but they're really not very good. Even by the standards of the time they are extraordinarily slow. Although their 10MHz clock speed sounds fast for the time, the architecture of the WE32100 CPU makes them much slower than similarly priced (or cheaper!) hardware you could buy from DEC or Sun in 1985.
