@petergleick Why is a “flare” described in this piece as a methane emission? It is correct that methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, but a good “methane flare” emits carbon dioxide, not methane. Still a waste if it can be avoided, but a lot less warming.Note avoiding flares is not always possible if they are there to prevent pressure buildup in a chemical plant. (I can see at least 5 flares usually from my living room window…)

@rwwh @petergleick There is a lot of confusion in this reporting. The devices cover the flame, which makes it more difficult (but not impossible) to sense the thermal signature from a working flare. However, if the flare has gone out, satellites and aerial detectors will still see the methane signature, whether or not there is a cover on the flare. The methane will still be released, the cover won't contain it.

Yes! This comment from @dingodog19 makes a lot of sense. Agree there is a lot of confusion in that reporting. @rwwh @petergleick

@petergleick Just criminalize metha waste hiding. And control it. Its like dumping your motor oil into a river.

@petergleick either I'm rrrrrreally tired or that headline could have been written better. At first I couldn't figure out how methane was flaring from satellites.
