Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think unfettered AI is a pretty neat idea. The same life form also thought digital watches with calculators on them were a pretty neat idea.

I had to explain 'digital watches that were also a calculator' to a Young Person and got the same confused reaction that I got when I explained that we used to pay money to ring a telephone number to find out what time it was.In neither case could I remember why we thought this was necessary in everyday life. I cannot think why we thought it was a good idea to be able to do maths on our wrists at any moment.

@CiaraNi I think it was because having a calculator at hand was handy but people didn't want to carry a standalone calculator around. So it was practical to combine it with something you carried around anyway.Plus, watches are also fashion accessories. So (some) people probably used it to express something about themselves. They're practical, smart, nerdy, "different"/unconventional (in regards to mainstream fashion), always prepared, ... 😄The time hotline was probably to check your clocks.

@Sven Watches have never gone out of fashion in my Gen X at least. I know younger people who never wear them, which means they are missing out on a fashion statement opportunity
