       As businesses and interest groups increasingly move to Discord, it starts to feel incredibly ripe for #enshittification.Discord is a natural “point of capture": if you build a community there (as a user or a server owner), it's very unclear to me if you could easily migrate away to something else if it turns nasty.And there are probably commercial incentives for Discord to change in ways that will hurt users: monetizing user data, intrusive ads, etc.I would be wary of committing too much.

       @angusm I completely agree. I've never understood why its so common for many communities to bet on #Discord, while there are so many good #OpenSource alternatives. Even communities claiming to support free software values sometimes solely rely on this closed source malware. 🤷‍♂️

       @LukasBrausch- ease of install- webapp+apps+desktop app- works very well- UI is slick and efficient.- easy to understand- very simple to start with (just a few clics to connect to a friend) and can evolve to a very complete set of tools- lots of people have it installed for vocal/message comms... So it was the perfect Troy horse to become something more.We can deplore the hegemony it's starting to have (and the shit to come) but surprised or misunderstand? Come on.@angusm

       The experience is very different (and actually very hostile) if you try to use Discord without a mobile phone number. I gave up after many tries, and convinced the group I was supposed to join to use an alternative for voice chat (for us it is Jitsi).CC: @LukasBrausch@mastodontech.de @angusm@mastodon.social
