@r000t Ah, he's written "2024". He might be full of shit: the "10 minutes" figure was from a paper a security researcher put out some time around (I *think*) SP2 about how bad unpatched XP was. I would be really surprised if it was still 10 minutes.I can say that if I put a machine on a new IPv4, one that has been completely dark for at least two years, the ssh brute-force attempts start in just a few minutes. (I had set up an experimental honeypot to see if I could cut down on ssh brute-force attacks by just dropping all traffic from any machine that tried to connect to port 22 on the previously unused address, with no DNS assigned to it except upstream's reverse DNS. It didn't even make a dent, there are too many boxes doing that nowadays.)

@teratologyAm I the only person who just isn't bothered by ssh brute force? Your properly-configured sshd should be accepting only key auth. Let randos try all the passwords they want. There is not one. Everything else is gravy. No root login, fail2ban, different port, port knocking... defense in depth is nice and good practice, but the only attack vectors not covered by "it's key auth only" can only be solved by only allowing ssh from internal address space. @p

@r000t @teratology > Am I the only person who just isn't bothered by ssh brute force? [...] Let randos try all the passwords they want.I think you think that the reason it annoys me is that I am worried they'll get in. This is not the case. It is annoying to have the log files filled with mostly garbage, because I have to sift through the log files for useful information sometimes. So most of the machines where that matters, I drop traffic from hosts or subnets based on behavior.> Your properly-configured sshd should be accepting only key auth.Depends entirely on which failure modes you are comfortable with for which machines. It's also not possible to do things this way for a lot of services: SMTP, for example.

@amerika @r000t > Attackers nowadays are boxes rented by the minute. Tracking IPs is less successful as a result. If I'm getting a bunch of shit I don't want from a machine, it seems reasonable to ignore that machine. It's not like the next guy that rents a machine and gets assigned that IP is going to be cool. The end result is that eventually, my terrible awk script has eliminated all of the AWS Lambda address space.> Do people still use standard ports on anything?I use them for basically everything. Putting it on a weird port doesn't change anything, anyone that has time to do a bigger scan or that has $50 to give to shodan.io will find it. Any public webserver will find plenty of NSE or zgrab UAs in the logs. Cost of doing business.

@tinfoil-hat @0 @mint @r000t > I have now an uptime from 28 daysHa, that's cool. Shoot for the high score. My personal high score was when my desktop machine hit 804 days a few years ago. I had a Twitter account that would spit out the thing's uptime, eventually expanded to multiple machines.Elon killed the API April of last year, though, and I didn't put the bot on fedi. That kinda sucked, because it was in continuous operation from 2008-10-07 06:33:39 to 2023-04-15 03:00:07. My account was idle/locked and the last few messages were about FSE, friends that worked at Twitter had vested and cashed out, they'd killed off the API that bitlbee used so I had to actually use their terrible website if I wanted to interact with Twitter and it was all politics or celebrity news because ~*~EnGaGeMeNt~*~ and it was not a great place to talk to friends about weird shit so I took a break from it in 2016 because I was so sick of election news and I was gone by the time FSE arrived, but the little bot was still chugging along. That bot was kind of my last tie, so there was some sentimental value attached. When Twitter decided to hold it down until the bubbles stopped, it might have been the oldest bot that was still running.I'm very glad fedi exists; I'm not Twitter's ideal user, probably no one in this thread is the consumer they are looking for. I am glad to be here, I'm glad there's a here here.themoon.pngfsestar.pngenoughbullshit.pngai.jpegdon_j._grundmann_candidate_statement.jpeglinksys.pngfse--all-s_right.pngdurgs.jpg

@p @r000t A few years ago I connected an unpatched Windows XP to the Internet and let it run and within minutes I saw it getting rekt. SP2 with patches and any decent firewall fixed the issues.

@maestro @mint @0 @r000t @tinfoil-hat > why the vim hateOh, I can join that one: vim is total shit. It's not even vi any more, it's emacs with a shittier scripting language and vi-like keybindings.I've never been to Uganda, I don't know jack shit about Uganda, and vim makes me wish the children of Uganda would starve.

@maestro @0 @p @r000t @tinfoil-hat I don't particularly hate it by itself, just the fact that it's included in every fresh installation of any distro instead of some sane editor. I had to use cat <<EOF on an offline machine because of that.

@rdr @0 @maestro @mint @r000t @tinfoil-hat I used it for maybe fifteen years; I don't remember when I switched from other-vi to vim. Some time around 6.0 or 7.0, I started getting apprehensive whenever I updated: "What new awful shit will I have to disable?" The most recent horror was the stupid load order, which was hopelessly byzantine to begin with, changed in 8.0 or around there. I just used strace and moved things to before/after files until I got it to do what I wanted again. I keep it on this machine for exactly one purpose: `git diff | vim -`. It is a pretty good diff reader. Otherwise, nvi and busybox's vi are both much more reasonable.

@leyonhjelm @0 @maestro @mint @r000t @rdr @tinfoil-hat Thanks to the wonders of static linking, I can just shove a busybox executable at a machine and have a regular vi if I need it, but ed suffices for almost everything that I don't use acme for. I think I could probably survive on just ed. Maybe if my machine had a non-glass tty, ha.I mean, :ken: still uses sam, and it's basically ed with windows. It's a pretty reasonable editor, I use it once in a while.
