@aral this was/is one of the things about social media that we don't have a good or really any solution to yet.I had to stop myself on twitter from wanting to know why people had blocked me, I think I'm mostly harmless, if a bit sweary. It would be nice if one could see _why_ a block occurs or has occurred.But then 🤷♂️

@jonoabroad A block is one thing (and, at an instance level, should be communicated with a reason). Shadow-banning/silencing without reason at the instance level is another (and should also be communicated). Twitter had better transparency in communicating some of these things (and allowing for appeals) than some fediverse instances.

@harriettmb Nope, their account is unlocked. You can see me because you’re following me. If I’m silenced, it means my posts won’t be seen on the server by anyone not already following me and all my follows get turned into follow requests, etc. I’ve not had trouble before so it must be a recent thing.

@nikodemus If you have it set to accept followers (no lock) and a follow request shows pending anyway that’s an indicator that the server has silenced you.

@jonoabroad @androcat I don’t give a shit if any specific account blocks me. While instances doing so for political reasons so their members won’t see certain viewpoints? Yes, I care about that. At the very least, I care that it is publicly-known so people can avoid them if that’s the case.

@bob If an instance is going to silence/block someone for their political posts, it should make that information public so people can use it when deciding whether to join that server. For people in #Ireland, for example, it is very relevant information to know if someone is silenced by mastodon.ie for their posts opposing #Israel’s #genocide of the #Palestinian people in #Gaza, should it turn out to be the case. Assuming that wouldn’t sit well with a lot of Irish folks.

@aral @padraig @mastodonie The way ActivityPub follows work, pending follows including on unlocked accounts can be caused by the target server being overloaded. Could that be the case here?Mastodon's UI usually jumps directly from "Follow" to "Following" on unlocked accounts even if the "Accept" hasn't arrived yet (it assumes it will arrive quickly). But if you refresh the page before it arrives, you'll see "Pending". If the server is overloaded, maybe it's failing to accept follows.
