Oh hey the Hudson's Bay Company turned 354 years old yesterday. How many department store chains out there can lay claim to starting as a royally-appointed 17th Century colonial resource extraction monopoly that effectively governed huge swathes of North America for the fur trade?

Ordered an aloo channa masala wrap from Lett'us Roll at the Yonge Street World Food Market and noticed the other wraps had jalapeños so I asked the guy if he could put jalapeños on mine and he looked at me like I'd insulted his mother. "Jalapeños? No, I'm putting spicy pickled veggies and chutney" and i was like "Yes sorry do that" and man that wrap was one of the best things I ever ate

Nice little lakefront park near my motel in Bowmanville, Ontario. There were swans just hanging out in the water. Also clouds of midges, this is their breeding season (nonbiting ones fortunately).

Since Ontario highway 401 is a death zone of reckless speeders and aggressive tailgaters I opted to take the slightly slower scenic Route 2 out of the province. You lose 10-20 km/h but get to see horses, cows, some small town Canadiana, bridges to the US, and the Thousand Islands.

Like, I saw so many near misses on A20 through Quebec which mostly seemed like just carelessness, but on 401 through Ontario it's more like a good chunk of drivers are actively using their racerboi BMWs and lifted Ford pickups to try and murder you -- and they get SO ANGRY when they're stuck behind my tiny little Fiat 500.

Got a bag of salt water taffy at a Circle K somewhere on Route 2 and it's from Burlington, Ontario, and I just realized Lake Ontario is freshwater so where'd the salt water come from, WHERE DID THE SALT COME FROM

Somewhere in Quebec I stopped at a rural Esso station for gas and found the pump screens were nonfunctional. An attendant who spoke no English came out and as I asked "desole, comment je vais acheter du gas-" she took a pump and used it to squirt a bit of regular unleaded into a Tim Hortons cup, and this somehow unfroze the screen

Notes on precautions I took on this trip: - Stayed in a motel in the outskirts rather than a more crowded downtown hotel. Ran an Aeramax air purifier in room for an hour before moving in and brought own pillow. - Masked indoors with shared air, or any crowded outdoor place like Yonge St. Generally made do with a Breatheteq KN95 earloop (CN Tower, I went for a full 3M Aura N95 respirator)- Outdoor dining only. Lucked into good weather and just got takeout to eat on the waterfront.

There was also lots of dusty construction around downtown Toronto so wearing a Breatheteq outdoors helped a lot with the dust. Not once did anyone give me shit anywhere for masking, and I saw more than a few respirator comrades out on the street. We shared solidarity glances.
