Spent a good chunk of the day fleshing out and trying to understand others' positions wrt governance in #nixos at https://nixpkgs.zulipchat.com/ Not the waters in which I normally swim.So far, the wheels haven't come off. Most everyone is operating in good faith.

One realization during this was roughly that you can't maximize for both meaning and inclusion simultaneously. Maximizing for meaning almost always implies that you will form an ingroup that defines itself by opposition to outgroups (for example, a religion). Maximizing for inclusion almost always implies being blind to out/in groups (for example, a public park commission). 1/

To those trying to maximize for meaning, diversity is defined as elevating the least fortunate amongst the ingroup and attempting to convince those in the outgroups to join the ingroup after an allegiance pledge. To those trying to maximize for inclusion, diversity is defined as working to include everyone without respect to in and out groups and without any pledges. 2/

I am personally maximizing for inclusion and discounting meaning almost totally, so my efforts are likely to be focused on negotiating with the meaning-seeking people for a result that has the broadest ingroup without extremes on the edges and the fewest pledges possible. 3/3
