In Switzerland, a mobile overpass bridge is used to carry out road work without stopping traffic

@stux wow! That seems like it would be very awkward and expensive compared to closing a lane.

@stux @johnefrancis How do they install the mobile lane without stopping traffic?

@stux on rural highways here, they use a "train" where they grind, recycle, and re-lay the asphalt in a continuous process. One full lane at a time. It does a few kms in a day. But even with moderate traffic, it's a challenge not having a lot of accidents and killing workers. They have to setup escorts to lead the traffic. So that's pretty awkward too. If this overpass moves along, it's a lot safer.

@stux ...Though it obviously helps to have long straight road segments...

@stux Another BIG advantage for the workers besides all important safety factor is less exposure to weather. Cooler temperatures, and shelter from nasty weather like heavy rains and winds.

@stux This is amazing. Probably an initial cost of all the necessary machinery, but the fact that people can still go to work while the roads are being repaired, likely returns this investment in the long run. Assuming this is done by the government, I mean.

@stux ha, in New Zealand they just put a "temporary" bridge over the crumpling one and basically went "that'll do" on the Forgotten Highway.Should mention: the old bridge was still very much holding the weight. 🤦♂️

@stux Not really usual in Switzerland: I guess they did it on the Zürich-Bern highway, where the traffic volumes are huge.

@stux Most of the video is about the painstaking processes the team uses to build a mirror-smooth surface that will probably last a long time.
