I'll say one more thing, & this is addressed to young women of "marrying" &/or "child-bearing age" (I hate those vomit-inducing phrases, but I think you understand my purpose in using them), & that's that if I were young--at this time, in this country--there's no way in hell I'd get married. @BootsChantilly This highlights why I’ve always objected to the framing of same sex marriage rights and marriage law reforms to allow people receiving disability benefits to get married without losing them as “marriage equality.” Marriage has never been about equality. It was invented to institutionalize patriarchy and that continues to be its main purpose, even as some couples treat it differently in their own lives.

@BootsChantilly Most of this happened to my Mother.Abusive husband, two kids. She took the kids and left him. No chance of divorce.Fell in love, had a baby, no birth control then. Her abusive husband got the divorce and the kids with her being declared an unfit mother, with my tiny body being proof. My name is forever enshrined in their divorce decree. Vote. Vote. Vote as if our very lives depend on it.

@DoesntExist I think it’s one of the points. They’re definitely in the mood to put us “back in our place.” To punish us for exercising our rights the past few decades. @stux @BootsChantilly Marriage is a protection. Married couples enjoy special protection internationally, regardless of their other status and can't be separated against their will (at least in Germany) by the state, e.g. in an asylum process. It also ensures custody of children and inheritance is secure in case one of the partners dies.

@andytiedye I wish every person who presents as a woman could leave that wretched, hateful, backward state, but the reality is that SO MANY just can’t. Moving to another state is a huge deal—financially, professionally, personally. I mean, I’d leave this entire country if I could take everyone I love with me. But I can’t. So I stay.

Since the woman gives way more to marriage and family than the man, speaking generally, it is safe to assume that men do not want to lose an unpaid source of labor. Women do well more than half the housework and nearly all the childcare, in addition to working full- to part-time. @BootsChantilly New York was one of the last states to adopt a no-fault statute. There were a number of 2nd wave feminists who believed is was a way for rich husbands to abandon their economically weaker spouses. When it passed, the suicide rate among women dropped dramatically (I forget the percentage). Turns out a quick divorce is better than being stuck with a shitty man. Who'd have thought?

@ATLeagle I’m 62. I started trying to get my tubes tied at 25–after I had my son & divorced his father. It took me 2.5 yrs & I have no idea how many consultations to find a doc who’d even listen to me. They were all too deeply concerned about the hypothetical desires of some hypothetical man in my future to consider MY very real desires/needs.This ain’t my 1st rodeo, pardner.

@BootsChantilly yep. You're not the first person i have heard say this.My wife needed a d&c AFTER the birth of our daughter because of tissue that stayed behind. They sent. Nurse out to talk to me to be sure there was permission from the husband before terminating the baby. I had fun asking them how this procedure would kill my daughter who was currently at my house.
