Hey language-learners, what's your tip for improving your ear? I can read French pretty well, with a glossary, and I can write it OK, but my hearing is garbage.

@ZachWeinersmith have you gotten your hearing checked recently? No, really. It's possible you're starting to have hearing issues and the first symptoms are trouble understanding a foreign language.

@ZachWeinersmith I believe there's a "slow Frrench" podcast. Also watch French TV shows with French subtitles turned on. Maybe even a French audiobook with the speed set to 0.75. If you choose a book or topic you know, it'll be easier to understand and therefore more fun.

@ZachWeinersmith Guessing from way out of left field here: have you tried listening to recordings at slower speed? Like YouTube at 75%? or even 50%You can then listen to the same thing at regular speed. Might help 🙂

@ZachWeinersmith I'd suggest a hearing test. Tested this week; am scheduled to get a hearing_aid as soon as. Adjusting the frequency responses made some consonants easier not to confuse.

@ZachWeinersmith Go and live for a while somewhere your language of choice spoken. If that isn't an option watch (well, listen to) TV and films. News or documentaries are probably easier to understand than fictional dramas. Turn on subtitles if you need to.

@ZachWeinersmith see if there are any local language practice groups near you with a mix of native speakers and language learners; getting practice in with real people and being able to ask “sorry, can you say that again” (in language, of course) face to face can help a ton. …but I did my best language learning in immersion classes in high school and university so ymmv

@ZachWeinersmith You've already received several good suggestions, and I'll add that quantity (amount of exposure, aka immersion) is also a critical learning factor. And persistence. Coming from French with high-school English, it took me two years of full English immersion to attain a level of fluency I was happy with. Also, reading does help if done at the same time.

@ZachWeinersmith I think this is basically a pure function of the amount of time you spend listening to people talk in native-level French. That's tricky because it means you have to spend time listening to things that you only expect to understand a small part of, which you probably won't want to. Ways to do that:- Re-watch your favorite shows or movies dubbed into French. It has to be ones you know well enough to understand what's going on even if you fail to interpret most of the dialogue.- Listen to songs and learn the lyrics.- Take a class taught in native-level French, where you feel obligated to attend lectures even when you don't understand much of them.

@ZachWeinersmith I see several suggestions to watch Netflix or some other streamer with the target language is set for audio and subtitles.I very much agree with setting the audio for the target language, but I find that setting the subtitles to the target language to be less than useful. Mostly because if the original language for the show is English, then the subtitles don't match the audio.An example of this is that I'm watching Star Trek:TOS with German audio, but the subtitles are simply a translation of the original manuscript, as if it were just created by Google Translate. The voice actors are using a script that was written in German by translators whose mother tongue is German, with German idioms and interjections. Sometimes the audio and subtitles match, but usually they don't.

@ZachWeinersmith another vote for music and TV shows dubbed into the other language. I'm rewatching old Star Trek seasons dubbed into German, alternating between no subtitles, German subtitles, and English subtitles.

@ZachWeinersmith the fastest way I found was to transcribe TV. I used news shows to do it. I would let them speak 3 or 4 words and then pause the show and write down what I thought they said. As I got better I could have longer stretches between pausing.I would never get through much of a show, but it really worked wonders. I think the magic is because it doesn't allow you to skip words

@ZachWeinersmith I've heard that watching children's TV shows in the language you're trying to learn is a great way to do it. They tend to speak more slowly, enunciate more clearly, and use a more basic vocabulary and grammar structure.

@ZachWeinersmith you have to know the weird sounds. For example as French it’s hard to differentiate the voiced and voiceless uvular fricative (German, modern Hebrew…). Once you know it, you can work on it specifically and overcome the difficulty eventually. Language teachers and linguists are great to point you those difficulties and to help you overcome them.

@ZachWeinersmith for me the best thing to do is to watch and listen to media in that language.For shows and movie don't hesitate to put the subtitles in said language or to slow the video (x0.75 is usually enough)
