       @paninid @aral @gerrymcgovern About a million times more water is lost by leaky water pipes. A few data centres don’t really add up, if you look at the numbers…

       @dgavin @paninid @gerrymcgovern How about we fix leaky pipes AND stop wasting water on AI? We can do two things at once. One doesn’t stop the other also being a problem.

       @aral @paninid @gerrymcgovern Of course, but our energy would be better used first fixing the real problems and then going after the crumbles 🙂

       @dgavin @paninid @gerrymcgovern That’s the thing, though, it’s not crumbs, it’s significant: https://theconversation.com/ais-excessive-water-consumption-threatens-to-drown-out-its-environmental-contributions-225854

       @aral The argument of the technologist is so often: Oh, look over there, they're much worse than we are. And all the while, technology creates far more environmental problems than it solves. Technology is always promising to solve environmental problems, while its general application does the exact opposite. Yes, let's fix leaking pipes and let's fix the much deeper and vastly more damaging rot that is at the heart of Big Tech.@dgavin @paninid

       @dgavin In 2024, China Water Risk estimated that China's data centers would use about 1.3 trillion liters of water annually, which is sufficient for 26 million people's residential needs. The amount would surpass 3 trillion liters a year by 2030.That's a lot of water, and data center water use is growing exponentially.https://www.techtimes.com/articles/303669/20240417/ai-data-centers-strain-chinas-water-supply-claims-new-study.htm@paninid @aral

       @Brad_Rosenheim @gerrymcgovern @dgavin @paninid @aral Thanks for sharing that! It is really insane to see this growth in data centers and how much they consume. Thinking how I can change what i do in my little business to reduce that. Not that I have that much cloud storage, but still, could a lot of what I have be put on a memory stick instead... project for the summer... minimize cloud use.

       @aral @Brad_Rosenheim @gerrymcgovern @dgavin @paninid I know it is not a big problem, but still, generating some cloud traffic. And these online stores and selling platforms are getting way too complicated, collecting and generating way too much useless data. I do not need 95% of what they generate...
