@hannu_ikonen @alshafei The name/address of the terrorism suspect was actually given to police by Apple, not Proton. The terror suspect added their real-life Apple email as an optional recovery address in Proton Mail. Proton can't decrypt data, but in terror cases Swiss courts can obtain recovery email.

@protonprivacy it's in the article “Upon receiving the recovery email from Proton Mail, Spanish authorities further requested Apple to provide additional details linked to that email, leading to the identification of the individual.”Furthermore: “Last year, when we noted that Proton Mail complied with nearly 6,000 data requests in 2022, Proton provided us with an explanation that inbox contents remain secure.”Don’t start blaming Apple 🙄 @hannu_ikonen @alshafei

@SebastienK @hannu_ikonen @alshafei Hi Sebastien, setting a recovery email is optional and we outline alternatives here: https://proton.me/support/set-account-recovery-methods

@protonprivacy Sure but you just do what Apple does. Comply. That's what you have to do if you ren a business. If you had the information that Apple had they wouldn't even needed to check with Apple. Seems to me that Apple kept their secrets safe until they started using Proton Mail. Just like their Proton inbox is safe we know the contents of their iPhone is safe as well if iCloud backups are not enabled (but in this case we will assume it is) 😂@hannu_ikonen @alshafei

@SebastienK There seems to be a misunderstanding. The user doesn't seem to have used their Apple account for anything that might be suspicious. They did however, use Apple ID as an optional recovery email for a Proton account, and then used that Proton account to create a Wire account. The law enforcement only found out about their Wire account, which led them to Proton and, unltimately, Apple: https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/08/encrypted-services-apple-proton-and-wire-helped-spanish-police-identify-activist/

BUT you pressure people into giving an email or a phone as an account recovery method by not marking it green if we choose only the files systems. if i disable both, you mark my settings orange as in danger/precaution. so what gives? you either let people only use recovery passphrases and files or you don't. marking them as unsatisfactory when we don't give out an email or a phone number is not only confusing but is bad faith policy. @protonprivacy @SebastienK @hannu_ikonen @alshafei

@jimdmac @alshafei Just be sure to wipe the SD card with alcohol and RFC 1149 gives you untraceable packets with up to 1TB window.
