@deprecated_ii how are they computing that cost? I buy 1/3th as much gas using a hybrid vs my old car.

@RustyCrab presumably it's a total cost thing including purchase price and maintenancebut their math is retarded, it doesn't cost $3 to drive a mile. maybe $0.30

@deprecated_ii including the purchase price would either defeat the point or be incredibly misleading on purpose. There's reasons people purchase teslas that aren't related to their cost to drive so the purchase price is incidental.

@RustyCrab yeah, but EV people love to talk about how EVs are cheaper than ICE vehicles. they aren't, when you look at total cost of ownership and lifespan. not even closeif someone wants to buy a $100,000 electric sports car that's fine, but I could put 500,000 miles on my car, buy another one, put 500,000 miles on that, and still have a lot of money left over vs buying an EV with similar capabilities (high ground clearance, AWD, 400 mile range)

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab Wear and tear and maintenance are surprisingly high especially if you pay dealership prices. You can look at consumer reports or AAA for their cost of ownership for X years, which assumes average mileage of 10-12k and divide from there. The first 36k miles or so, when basically everything is under warranty, there's almost no maintenance outside of oil changes, but it gets worse over time...

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab To that point, I think dealership maintenance for EVs does indeed make them a killer on this. The fact that Tesla can charge like 20k to replace a battery pack and heat sync when it's probably something that could be done for 5k solo or 10k at an independent shop.

@BowsacNoodle @RustyCrab still nowhere near $3 a milea $30k car that's a total lemon and needs a ton of maintenance and gets 25 mpg doesn't even crack $1 a mile

I think the original study is just doing the ratio of new car price and the average annual miles driven in those cars. Electric car owners clock significantly less mileage than any other type of car, and the higher costs make this value off. https://www.iseecars.com/most-driven-evs-study#v=2024Doing some maths, assuming the average EV $/mile is 3.8c/mile (https://ecocostsavings.com/electric-car-cost-per-mile/) and the average gas $/mile is 15c/mile (https://medium.com/@alex.domash/us-gasoline-prices-are-relatively-moderate-824a189a33fa), then we can come to some other figures. The original study says the average gas car costs $40009 new, and the average EV $52387 new. That's $12378 in difference, and I think you'd have to drive 110517 miles in the EV before breaking even compared to a new gas car, which if the article says the average EV owner drives 10256 miles a year, that's 10.77 years to break even...assuming that there's no other costs like maintenance that are worse on EVs compared to gas cars.

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab @BowsacNoodle Isn't $3/mile standard write-off cost for taxes? The thing that makes electric cars so expensive is the battery replacement every dozen years or so.I literally can't use one regardless because I make somewhat regular driving trips in excess of 1000 miles.

>looking at the article the math is so obviously wrong it makes me think it was AI generatedGiven the atrocious state of what passes for journalism these days, it wouldn't surprise me if a human wrote it. No Child Left Behind, It Takes A Village, etc. An attempt was made, editor gave the 'tard a pat on the head and went with it.

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab Factor in insurance and a few other factors and it might get closer. Electric has the interesting added cost in reas which use tiered pricing per KWH for peak, off-peak, and metered usage. I wouldn't be surprised if net electrical cost goes up dramatically for a lot of people who go full electric. Hybrid seems to make more sense to me; why not get more mpg and have a bit more power in the process? If they can pair those with better (non-cvt) transmissions, they'll be able to squeeze even more mpg out.

@deprecated_ii @RustyCrab I can't vouch for the maths in this article but usually these estimates are usually done based on the total cost of the first five years of ownership. Studies I have seen done in Australia find the break even point for getting an EV over ICE is when petrol hits $3.5/L AUD (~10.5 USD a gallon)
