If you're on an android phone or device, you have three days to opt out of google's "find my device network."You'll likely have gotten an email about it, but I know in my case, GMail's own machine learning system didn't mark said email as important or meaningfully different in any way. I don't know what that says, but i'm pretty sure it's nothing good. Anyway, in case you can't find the email, you can get where you need to from this link:https://www.google.com/android/find/settings/fmdn

@Wolven FYI I had to first accept a "yes I want this" and then click back through to get the prompt for "opt out of network"I.e., for other folks reading this, might need to click through twice

@Wolven It's a bitcinconvenient, but I just stay logged out of Google except when updating software. Of course I don't use Gmail either, because why would you?

@Wolven Wow. They make it hard to tell if it's off. When I open Find Device on my phone I get two options: "Accept" (highlighted button) or "Close" (smaller option). If I press close, it closes the app.So you can't go and see the setting with your eyeballs [This Option: Off], but you can get to a screen that would like you to turn it on.

At present I have received reports of or directly seen at least four distinct UX/UD things that might happen when you go to that URL. Google gets worse literally every single day. JFC.

@Wolven make it 5 - for some users, there is literally no way to opt out whatsoever. If you do say "no, absolutely not," it simply 'errors' so they can ignore your opt-out.

@Wolven I do want to nuke this thing and put a real Linux OS on it... No more f***ing Google tracking already. 😡I just got an email server working for the first time in many years of trying and of course the shitheads won't let it send emails to them without adding a txt record to our DNS.

@Wolven (it's highly likely that at least two of those categories depend on whether you're on mobile or desktop. it's also possible that it depends on whether you're signed in to Google or not. this is educated speculation based on our experience at Google years ago, we haven't tried to verify it.)

@Wolven Note that this does not send your location data to Google, if that is what you are worried about: https://security.googleblog.com/2024/04/find-my-device-network-security-privacy-protections.htmlTotally understand wanting to turn it off if you desire, but I think it can be argued it is fairly safe with your data.

@Wolven On my phone, from the url, I could select that I didn't want it for any of my devices, but then no button to continue. So I closed the app. When I checked settings, it was turned on. It was also checked on my tablet. Argh. That has to be enshitification by design. Turned it off on all devices by the settings approach

@Wolven there seems to be quite a lot of well-planned engineering decisions in this solution. (https://security.googleblog.com/2024/04/find-my-device-network-security-privacy-protections.html) Are you against it for ideological reasons or some technical reason?

@Wolven When I clicked your link I was presented with a map and with an overlay that asked if I would like to participate in find my phone. I tapped no thank you. Is that how you opt out? Because I can't find anything from the page google sends me to when I hit no thank you.

@Wolven We're on Android but we're running Lineage with no Google stuff installed (beyond base Android itself, of course) and no Google account. Are we safe?
