Personally I just hate any money spend on "borders to keep migrants out", often billions of Euros on stopped people :amaze: If people are desperate they will come either way and they should! I would also if I was in that positionInstead put some more effort in finding and solving reasons why people migrate in the first place but do accept and help the ones that do comeA higher wall or an extra guard isn't gonna help anyone, on both sidesBut that's just me š¤·

One of the reasons I love scifi movies and tv shows is that often it's "planet earth" or "humans" versus .... š½ or whateverI was always like: "border are so 1900's" and while I knew it was just a future dream, with the war in Ukraine the realisation of humans not being ready for that kicked in all the harder

@stux I still remember the border between Germany and the Netherlands in the late 70s... When I was going on vacation with my parents we had to stop and had to show our passports. It was a great thing when borders in Europe came down

@stux Iād say we are past this.Frontex has been involved in documented crimes against humanity, for years. The response is at best a shame, given what the EU Parliament adopted in the past few months. The former, forced-to-leave, Frontex director is now on the main neofascist list in France and will be elected as MEP with flying colors. He belongs to a court and to jail, and will be a MEP. Iām livid.

@stux The UK government has actively avoided and ignored any such practical, pragmatic, open, intelligent or otherwise workable approaches, for the simple reason it put them in power and keeps them there. If the right really cared they would, for example, want to do as much about climate change as possible and *increase* international aid. But they don't - it's easier to just point the finger and blame others for their abject failures.

@stux not just you. You give folk refuge you establish what skills they have, you support them to use these skills to 1. Give them dignity 2. Help the economy. You find a way to help those still stuck in camps or dodging bullets and get them out of the clutches of traffickers. How hard is that? If every developed country worked in tandem everyone would benefit - those needing help and countries needing workers. The lack of humanity rages me

@stux that's basically unequal exchange and it's why some countries keep exploiting other countries for personal gain instead of cooperating so that all of humanity benefits.See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unequal_exchange for a very short explanation

@stux In the Traveller RPG there are lots of government styles for planets, one is "balkanized" for planets that don't get their shit together. :/I guess it'd need an outside threat and at least one catastrophe for us to join forces.
