AFAIK, @openstreetmap provides the best dataset for topo maps. It has almost every existing trail and provides trail's difficulty metadata which can be very useful in some cases. So, the best hiking tools rely on #OSM.In addition to using the best dataset, good hiking tools should provide a map where:- trails are clearly visible,- difficulties are displayed to prevent the user from going down a dangerous path,- special paths like via ferratas are indicated,- hike planning can be done.1/n

I recently looked at some of the best tools available today for hikers, here is my selection:- LocusMap coupled with openandromaps,- OpenStreetMap with Tracestack layer- LocusMap web planner,- GaiaGPS,- OrganicMaps. In openandromaps.org maps, trails are clearly displayed, hiking routes and special paths are indicated, colors differentiate difficulties. Associated to @LocusMap which adds shaded elevation and route planning, the duo becomes a must have for advanced hikers.2/n

openstreetmap.org added the Tracestack rendering layer some months ago. The result is less precise that openandromaps in term of elevation, but it is quite good. Unfortunately, planning tool is missing in this map.LocusMap provides a free online planning tool which is based on their own maps which are much less precise than OSM.BTW, it can be very handy when used coupled with OSM maps.https://web.locusmap.app3/n

Gaia GPS seems to be a quite good tool too.Elevation precision and rendering have lower quality, but trail and difficulty indications are clear, hike planning is provided.Maps are base on OSM.https://www.gaiagps.comOrganicMaps is my 2nd favorite tool. It's an open, free, privacy-aware and fast growing tool.Maps rendering is not yet ideal for hiking purpose in mountains, but otherwise, the tool is excellent, very intuitive and with a very efficient embedded planner.https://organicmaps.app/

@aizelauna The ones I've tried from your list I found miserable to use, and/or missing even major trails. But I'll give them another shot. It's been years.

@ghastMajor trails missing in OSM maps? In which country was it? That said, it is possible that OSM community is not active everywhere in the world.

@ghastFrom my personal experience, it looked like touristic places are very well covered in the US.But, the country is so huge that it is likely that places with few human activity are not well covered.
