NYPD have stormed Columbia campus using tear gas and drawn weapons to remove protesting students. They have removed student radio and other professional journalists from the scene. WKCR 88.9 has ongoing live updates. Do not look away from this, and do not let it pass unremarked.

@Wolven wtaf. I mean, totally predictable based on history, but still, wtaf. I am sad and angry and something else that doesn't have a word yet.

@Wolven If they thought being white privileged scions of wealth would prevent them from getting the BLM treatment, they should probably find a better college.

@shekinahcancook Deeply unhelpful in this moment when you could be offering solidarity.

@Wolven Solidarity with supporting terrorism and a fundamentalist theocratic regime that executes lgbtq folks and treats women like property and livestock? No thanks.

@Wolven Official reports that I've seen say no tear gas was used (and actually, if it had been we would have expected to see people being brought out coughing, etc.) However, flash bangs were used at entry (to the areas where people were inside after breaking in through windows, etc.). The smoke from flash bangs looks similar to tear gas especially after dark.

@Wolven I was actually watching for signs of people being brought out with tear gas symptoms (or other signs of obvious physical distress) and haven't seen any so far. Obviously, my views from 3000 miles away are limited.

@Wolven I'd actually amend that to "threatened to kill protestors" if they were indeed drawing live fire weapons. (I don't doubt that they'd do that, it's just that if they were "never aim a gun at someone you do not intend to shoot" etc)

@Wolven What the Hell are you taking about? Vandalizing & Terrorizing a community is not protest.Stop the gaslighting.

@Wolven Perhaps someone should have remarked on the way that these people have crossed the boundary of protest into outright intimidation and harassment of Jews, and open calls for the genocide of Israelis. But even setting that aside, they were not, and are not, exercising their right to free speech when it limits the freedoms of their peers. Don't let it pass unremarked — remark upon the fact that they are behaving like racists and question why they have not been treated as such.

@Wolven Historically, it had always been a great idea by state institutions to fight student protests. That never ended well for states.

@shekinahcancook @Wolven Most are protesting out of solidarity with the PEOPLE of Palestine. While I have no doubt there might be the occasional tankie or such who is "Hamas is the state enemy of Israel"Most of those of us who care about Palestinian lives (including me) are supporting the cause for the Palestinian people NOT the "leaders" that used their suffering as stakes for a bet, and most of us want everyone to be safe and at peace, no genocide, no terrorism, no war.

@shekinahcancook @Wolven And secondarily, we support OUR students, our own leftist allies who are being brutalized by police. That the violence BIPOC faced has spread like a fascist cancer to *anyone who challenges business as usual or is too loud or who leaves work to strike etc etc etc* isn't equality - it means we have a police problem that's even WORSE than it was because now NO ONE CAN SPEAK OUT WITHOUT FEAR OF BEING POLICED TO DEATH

@shekinahcancook @Wolven Even if, for the sake of argument, *every single protestor* was some kind of conspiracy theorist or propaganda dupe or whatnot (they aren't, this is only a hypothetical for addressing the cop problem)Wouldn't it be concerning that police are overreacting like this? That people are getting their heads bashed in, getting gassed, getting live fire weapons pointed at them... JUST for peacefully camping out in public and Being Wrong/Being Weird if they were?It should be.
