“A lot of rich people don't actually want an education system or the educated population that would come along with it. Sure, it would be better for everyone. But it would also mean having to share, and these people have let their greed literally drive them insane.”https://www.okdoomer.io/im-a-professor-heres-why-im-walking-away-from-my-tenure/1/2

“They don’t know what’s best for themselves anymore, much less what's good for our civilization. They’re just panicking, hoarding money, and then panicking some more. That’s why they’re all building mega yachts and moving to island bunkers. They know they've screwed us all, and they’re deeply terrified.”https://www.okdoomer.io/im-a-professor-heres-why-im-walking-away-from-my-tenure/2/2

@aral Stupid society is way more easier and cheaper to rule than educated one. That's nothing new. 😉 Such ways are well known and practiced since ancient times. Look at the history. Rome, Egypt, Babylon, Mongolian Empire and so on. Only few, carefully chosen one individuals were able to gain, learn some knowledge and they must pay a lot for that to their mentors.

@aral Somehow I am beginning to suspect that "wokeness" might not actually be the most pressing problem of universities.

@aral A heart-wrenching story.Thank you for publishing this. It’s a grave warning to European states, which are turning hard right by the dozen and dismantling equality faster than you can spell cat.You can lose equality and fairness in a society in one generation.

@aral American colleges are so bizarre and like everything else they are this weird outlier in the Western world. In Europe for example if you want to be a professional footballer you get signed a club. In the US the colleges are more like a football club that teaches poetry or physics as a side hustle.

@aral there's a lot that's accurate in there, but also very little about the actual students, and while wanting to teach fully remote because of one's family concerns is understandable, I'm also getting a sense of burnout. As to athletics? That is true for a handful of schools, but not the majority. The pay and the staff and the hours are all dead on tho. I still enjoy writing at a place where success is measured in various and gowns, not dupatta and sense.

@aral Here's an irony:My university forces everyone to disclose outside income. So if you have a second job or a side hustle, you're technically supposed to report it. You're supposed to ask them for permission. They can say no.That's right, the same university that gave me a chocolate bar for a raise also says I can't take on a second job to support my family. They're worried it would distract me from all the free work I'm doing for them. They never say this part out loud, but I also think they don't want anyone to ever build up any kind of financial cushion or independence. If we did that, they wouldn't be able to push us around. We could actually quit.

@aral Another great quote:"These days, it makes more sense to work at Chipotle than to try and become a tenured professor. And if that doesn't have "social collapse" written all over it, then I don't know what does."

@aral I could have told people 35 years ago that education is purely white supremacy and ruling class fuckery. They grade inflate for white boy's, they respond to WOC less often, they grade us worse, then they charge a ransom for a degree that isn't necessary. But we die 10 years sooner for not having one because wealthy white employers hire for pedigree.

@aral At my (former) university, departmental funding was tied to increase in enrollment semester on semester. In other words, the incentive was to give everyone As. No need to teach anything. It _did_ make grading easier.

@aral Thanks! An awesome excoriation of neutered education."Politicians & CEOs have always wanted kids to be in factories, not schools.""Hedge fund managers & CEOs are…directing all the cash & resources to business schools & STEM & letting everyone else wither & die. They don't want normal people to get an education, not anymore. They want normal people to do undesirable jobs, at least until the right robot comes along."https://www.okdoomer.io/im-a-professor-heres-why-im-walking-away-from-my-tenure/#Education #Capitalism #Enshittification

@aral This is the example of what happened under the American system where college education and healthcare are both not subsidized by the government and costs ran out of control. Now the educators are bailing out after burning out.Our healthcare system is also burning out: Doctors and nurses bailing out: work hours are impossible to sustain and still make safe medical decisions.Pilots have safety restrictions on how many hours they can fly. Doctors and nurses no longer seem to.

@aral the billionaire class have no connection with the “masses” and that is why they fear them. These people have been insulted from society all their lives, having people doing things for them so they didn’t need to interact with the masses.

@aral Those with wealth vested in business want a work force educated to the point of being useful drones; capable of functional intelligence whilst working, but no independence of thought outside of that.

@aral I don’t have a PhD and worked in a state (NC) where tenure doesn’t exist for community college faculty and I was making more than the author when I walked away too 2.5 years ago because of workplace bullying by people with protected legal status and hopelessly incompetent administrators. All of higher ed in America is a giant mess. Stay away.

@aral This is one of the best thing I've read in a long time. No whining. Just the facts. And the facts are sad AF. America is facking up everything... education (all levels), Healthcare, climate change/ecology policies, immigration, etc... etc... I'm old enough to remember when we led the world. We were leaders for a reason. That reason's gone.

@aral hyper educated multi degree nick here. Get a trade. There is so much that has to be learned in trades: maths, physics, communications, hand skills responsibility. Not part of a corporate roll up, yet.
