Take more photos. Shoot more videos. Print more pictures. You'll be glad, when time passes

@ajroach42 My problem is organizing them all. They are basically all in a giant pile right now. Any recommendations?

@freakazoid @@ernie was playing with an organizational/Indexing tool that seemed promising. I sidestep the problem by printing pictures and hanging them or putting them in albums. I also have a quick and dirty photosharing/archival script that I use for events and stuff. It's tied to a calendar, and sends me an email every day with a "this day in history" and a prompt to share new photos and captions. It's not an actual solution, but it gets me close enough that I haven't looked for anything better.

@ajroach42 I kept hold of 2 hard drives of pictures of outdoor unlicensed raves 20 years ago, and finally shared them now the statute of limitations is long passed (and most featured are in their 40s and 50s and not involved in the outlaw events any more so it doesn't incriminate anybody), folk were really happy to see them..

@vfrmedia yes! People are always happy to see the old photos, even the ones that make them sad.

@ajroach42 @freakazoid Immich is what you want. It has a self-hosted machine learning mechanism that can identify photos by visual type so you don't have to hand classify. It is smart enough that it can figure out when I'm taking pictures of computer screens.

@ajroach42 @harshad I dunno, I find I tend not to look at photos much. When I do, some make me very happy, but many of them are pretty pointless, especially if I can't remember when they were taken.

@econads @harshad I'm not sure what kind of a response you're looking for here, but I assume you're looking for something. If you don't find joy in photography, or you don't find photography to be a suitable memory aid, perhaps you'd find more joy in journaling.

@ajroach42 @harshadMaybe that was a bit of a downer, sorry. I wasn't trying to begrudge anyone their enjoyment. I don't see so much value in memories I think? I don't mind forgetting things too much. I know it's a weird point of view in our society :-) I also find that photographs don't really live up to the real thing, I would rather just watch the sunset than be distracted trying to record it. Also I've enough friends who take better pictures than me that I can just be a parasite like that.
