@ajroach42 when I was on one of my bulk media buy splurges one of the listings on ebay that caught my eye was a guy selling single copies of his self-produced CD for a few bucks, so I bought one, why not. Not bad, either.Let's get these popular, and then let's start putting our self-produced movies out through this channel. Just, drive around dropping your new film in the free blockbuster boxes and see how audiences react.

@ajroach42 So on the one hand, I like the idea. On the other, I kinda wonder how well DVDs would actually hold up to the elements? I mean, ostensibly, the box would be weather-resistant, but still.Admittedly that's also something to worry about with a tiny Free Library, but still.

@belcher I haven't done it in years. I last did it with the Piratebox software: https://www.piratebox.cc/IIRC, this has been forked in to library box and biblebox orr something to that effect, but I haven't checked in yet. I think @onan might have a lead on the current software.

@yam655 these projects tend to flame out. Most offline first projects tend to flame out because they are, by necessity, separate from their communities. I'll probably end up DIY'ing something based on what I remember from previous projects.

There was one in my hometown for a few years, apparently. Closed earlier this year due to vandalism (someone smashed the front window.)I think we'll use a sheet of quarter inch acrylic for the window to make that less likely. (Otoh, ours will be installed either indoors or in our back garden.)

At a glance, I think connectbox will be a suitable base for my little free blockbuster's little free netflix/Spotify. I dunno if it'll do everything I want, but it looks easy enough to modify.

@ajroach42... Would it be possible to put in a small computer (like a Pi 0 or something more open), network it, turn it into an Access Point that only let's you access newellijay.tv, and set it up as a free streaming location?

@ajroach42I'd be tempted to use that project called something like "picogopher" that creates a simple Gopher and web server on a Pico and sets it up as an access point, then modify that to be able to read SD cards. Being able to run on a microcontroller keeps the power usage down and provides the possibility of an unattended solar powered device!@yam655
