@futurebird There are simple solutions to issues we’ve seen with infrastructure attackes. (1) Take the freaking systems off of the internet. There is usually no good reason for them. If you must have it on the Internet for monitoring there are systems for that that don’t allow remote control.(2) Change the freaking default passwords that come with the systems.(3) Remove accounts for departed employees.Many of the people running these systems don’t even do the minimum for security.

@futurebird I wonder if this was hacks of the same Israel-manufactured devices as in the last set of hacks of small water systems that were reported.

@futurebird Luckily there are increased resources available to local communities, specifically the cyber-underserved that can help prevent this. My company (a non-profit), Center for Internet Security is funded in part by the government to provide that tech free of charge. The biggest challenge is getting the word out to sparsely connected communities that the resources are available.
