https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-67930041Children from low-income working families who do not qualify for free school meals are going to class hungry, a Belfast head teacher has said.Katrina Moore, principal of Malone Integrated College, said that to watch a child go hungry was heart-breaking.The secondary school in Finaghy has about 800 pupils, just over half of whom are entitled to free school meals.As a temporary measure to address hunger, Ms Moore is using grant money to provide free food to all her pupils.The principal told the BBC's Good Morning Ulster programme she was "very conscious of those young people who I know are probably not going to get a hot meal at any time during the day whether it be breakfast dinner or an evening meal".

@HebrideanHecate My mate sent her kid to Malone and withdrew him after a few months. She said there was no pride in education or work ethic, she felt her son was being dragged down by others who couldn't give a shit. So I do wonder to what extent these kids are going hungry through genuine need and how much because feckless parents have prioritised other things? She was talking about 11 and 12 year olds, rather than peak teen, so I'd say their attitude is learned at home. Either option is a tragedy however.

@Lady_Penelope @HebrideanHecate I was wondering that, too. Thanks for speaking up, because I was afraid that it was mean to say. Peanut butter and bread seem affordable to almost anyone. If the families truly can't afford it, that is heartbreaking.

@Cousin_Isobel @Lady_Penelope The thing is it is the kids who suffer, if the parents are pissing it away on drugs or whatever. There are plenty of families in poverty too where it isn't any of their doing at all, it's the shite of a system and the insane rents etc etc etc, but if it is through gormlessness and that then it still isn't the kids fault, and they need fed.

Malone is in Finaghy, a small strip between the very affluent part of South Belfast and West Belfast, which has one of the highest rates of child poverty in Europe and alcoholism rife. @Lady_Penelope @HebrideanHecate That's an interesting idea. I'm fairly poor, myself, and sometimes, I do think it's a result of a lifelong negative mindset or perhaps a "scarcity mindset." At the same time, I speak well and can "pass" as middle class.Low wages and high rent can be killer. If I look back to when I had even less, I sometimes lived on saltines. I can't imagine watching my child have to do it.

@HebrideanHecate @Cousin_Isobel Preach. We looked at another house there and it was double the price we're paying now and marginally worse. Kitchen was tiny and realistically we need space for a dryer if we ever expect to live damp free in Belfast**not possible, damp reduced more likely.
