@p Came back, almost exactly five minutes: just long enough for me to get nervous. Looks like everything's in order, so Plan A: qemu-kvm accelerationism.

The part that does make me a little nervous is booting a new kernel remotely. The least possible fun you can have with a computer is a kernel that balks when you try to boot it and that is where the Linux bloat starts to actually matter. It's infrequent; I don't think I've had one that compiled but wouldn't boot in several years. Flashbacks to compiling the kernel in the 90s or the early aughts.`make oldconfig` takes hours nowadays, so I read through the diff of the previous kernel's .config and this one, mostly looking for stuff related to memory and KVM, I see some ECC this and some NUMA that, and I have a brief moment of panic when I see this:-CONFIG_HAVE_IDE=y+# CONFIG_HAVE_IDE is not setAnd then I remember the server has no IDE devices and that the entire deal was renamed to "PATA" years ago. First clean reboot this box has had in a while.I should also start remembering to cc @p because these threads sometimes don't federate because of the lockdown situation around the place.

@p > It's infrequent; I don't think I've had one that compiled but wouldn't boot in several years. Flashbacks to compiling the kernel in the 90s or the early aughts.Someone said something like "Don't tell me that worrying never helps. The things I worry about never happen." I am pretty sure it was Jefferson but I can't find it.Also now SPC is doing the over-delivery thing. We'll see if it settles down.

@p @p Very rarely had the kernel breaking but initrd and grub quite few times, made me used to test that stuff before a reboot with qemu (+spice if I need a graphical console, fucking PCs and their usage of framebuffers over a serial console) for some machines.

@lanodan @p > initrd and grub quite few times,I don't run GRUB anywhere I can avoid it. If I have ever seen a more overwrought bootloader, I must have suppressed the memory. I don't think it's designed to be used directly.I run most of these systems without an initrd, too. I should probably do a minimal initrd like "if you can't mount root, start dropbear or whatever the smallest sshd is" for servers.> made me used to test that stuff before a reboot with qemuThe worry wasn't that the kernel wouldn't work at all, but mainly that I would have omitted something that would be necessary to make the machine come up. Some driver gets deprecated and moved and I hadn't enabled the new one, or sometimes you get something contradictory, or the net interfaces get reordered and renamed, or some init script gets angry.> +spiceI tunnel the VNC ports over ssh. I still haven't used spice for anything. It does seem like it should be semi-trivial to do the VGA memory region as ncurses but even ncurses is a pain.> usage of framebuffers over a serial console)I really would prefer serial console. You can mostly get it, a lot of BIOSes don't mind talking to the serial port. At least once LILO comes online, LILO will talk to the serial port, so you're not beholden to the hardware at that point. It's not *quite* as nice as old Sun hardware but it does work at least. The DC has to hook up one of the KVM-over-IP devices and it's a pain and after that, they always wanna hook up the one that does some Java nonsense that doesn't even work under Linux so I have to say "No, the one that does regular VNC" every time. I'd rather they hook a serial cable up to link my box with a terminal server, but no one even makes those any more, I think.I managed to get bochs to do DOS that way once, but it spat out the entire screen on every update. I had to patch it, but I don't remember what I did. (My patch was trivial, I remember it only taking half an hour and most of that being spelunking; I don't remember what was missing. It was like ten years ago, recollection is fuzzy. It was a stunt-hack, mycroftiv had attached LP49 to his ANTS hubfs and it seemed like a kind of perverse fun to get a Plan 9 cluster that could talk to DOS and get a "C:\>" prompt in acme.)

@p @p Yeah, I've been wanting to get rid of grub quite few times, sadly the simpler ones don't do ZFS and I'd rather avoid having /boot being on a separated filesystem (that then wouldn't be easily mirrored on two boot disks).> I should probably do a minimal initrd like "if you can't mount root, start dropbear or whatever the smallest sshd is" for servers.I'd avoid dropbear, it seems to be a barely maintained fork of OpenSSH, probably better to just pick OpenSSH or use tinyssh.btw I made https://hacktivis.me/git/make-initrd/ for my stuff, should improve it a bit in terms of configuration but it's been very stable and unlike some initrd it properly bails out to a rescue shell instead of looping on a bad state.> I really would prefer serial console.Same, I wish all computers would still have a serial port (or USB console port that's effectively serial with an adapter), sadly most of mine don't, even though it's in the PC standard. And for DCs, couldn't you attach something like a small ARM board? That's pretty much what IPMI is (except typically with a webshit console).

@lanodan @p > ZFSAh, right.> avoid having /boot being on a separated filesystemBack when the LBA32 thing got added to LILO, I had gotten in the "separate boot partition" habit. It keeps the bootloader simple. I still usually do that: uboot likes it that way (though it can understand ext[234] nowadays) so ARM/RISC-V do that, an encrypted root basically requires it.> barely maintainedIt doesn't matter too much if it's a "contingency sshd" that you turn on when the system fails to boot.> OpenSSH or use tinyssh. Will have a look.> https://hacktivis.me/git/make-initrd/Nice!> I wish all computers would still have a serial portThat would be nice.> And for DCs, couldn't you attach something like a small ARM board? That's pretty much what IPMI is (except typically with a webshit console). It's probably easier to just eventually have another machine in there, or replace the existing one, or just get a bigger pipe to my house and then if I need to fix something, I'm already there.
