Coined by Michael Crichton, Gell-Mann AmnesiaMedia carries with it a credibility that is totally undeserved. You have all experienced this, in what I call the Murray Gell-Mann Amnesia effect. (I refer to it by this name because I once discussed it with Murray Gell-Mann, and by dropping a famous name I imply greater importance to myself, and to the effect, than it would otherwise have....

Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them....

In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know. That is the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect. ...

@stewil102 I stopped reading the papers 20 years ago, but I can related to this phenomenon. What i've devolved into is a mistrustful consumer of every media, including web sources, even my most trusted (non-journalistic standard level of verification) ones. A bodily residential resonance in the gut: does it sound right. And that's a helluva way to navigate a dangerous world of decisions financially, religiously, and politically. But it's where I am (we are?).

I'd point out it does not operate in other arenas of life. In ordinary life, if somebody consistently exaggerates or lies to you, you soon discount everything they say. In court, there is the legal doctrine of falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus, which means untruthful in one part, untruthful in all....

But when it comes to the media, we believe against evidence that it is probably worth our time to read other parts of the paper. When, in fact, it almost certainly isn't. The only possible explanation for our behavior is amnesia.- Michael Crichton

@stewil102 It's because there is no other source of information. It's truly monotonous; A SUPER wealthy elite - I'm not just talking rich people you know, or people with just walk-around money like a couple hundred million - I'm talking old Royalty that goes back hundreds of years, and these are the people talking through a tube into your eyes and ears. There is no other source of information. Even when it seems like the tube-talkers hate each other, they are working together against us.

@stewil102 I'm a CorbettReport subscriber, and he talks with Dr. Drew about this very subject in this morning's missive. Although I read many of Crichton's fictional works, I'd never heard of this concept before you brought it up this morning. Thanks!https://corbettreport.substack.com/p/james-dissects-the-media-matrix-with?utm_source=podcast-email%2Csubstack&publication_id=725827&post_id=140544700&utm_campaign=email-play-on-substack&utm_medium=email&r=5blqj

@stewil102 Fascinating read. Thanks for sharing. This is the main reason that I have stopped reading or watching any news regularly. If I do read an article or watch a news segment, I’m always skeptical about the whole thing and will do my own research when I don’t have sufficient knowledge of the subject. The “news” as it stands today is not there to inform. It is there propagandize the public. To push what ever narrative the media outlet is paid to do.
