I hear that we can now upload our podcast to YouTube via RSS, but we've been uploading simple (and in the past, sometimes not so simple) videos we create ourselves for years. What do #podcasters here who think about the tech side think: Does it make sense to switch to uploading through the RSS feed, or should we stick with uploading the videos we make ourselves? If the details matter, here is the channel. https://www.youtube.com/grammargirl#podcasting @evoterra @lexfri @james @leo @tomwebster 1/2

A possible complication is that every 4 to 6 weeks, I have an interview episode with full video that definitely makes sense to put on YouTube. 2/2

@grammargirl@zirk.us The auto created videos aren’t anything interesting to look at.I only advice connecting your podcast’s RSS feed to YouTube if you aren’t already posting videos. Just about anything anyone does manually will look much better than what YT does. Cuz it doesn’t do much.

@evoterra Thanks! Most of ours are just a cover slide now and a credit slide at the end, but we sometimes do more (and they're nice slides). Do you think there will be any algorithm benefit to using their system that would be worth a switch?

@grammargirl I'm not a podcaster (video or audio), but if I were I'd definitely embrace this! I prefer to self-host my work for their point-of-truth, & this would aid that way of working!

@grammargirl @evoterra @lexfri @james @leo @tomwebster Rob Walch talked about this on The Feed at the end of last year. His strong advice was that if we upload via RSS we should do so through our hosting service as it will keep all of our stats together. He also warned about the ads aspect.

@lizcovart @evoterra @lexfri @james @leo @tomwebster Thanks, Liz!The way we're manually uploading seems to have the same drawbacks though. The views aren't integrated into our podcast hosting numbers and our dynamically inserted ads don't go in the show.It would be easier to let it happen through the RSS feed, but we'd lose the ability to tweak things here and there in the videos. For example, very occasionally, I'll still put up the spelling of an unusual word or two.

@grammargirl Using Parrot RSS, you can get any RSS feed to appear in your Mastodon feed.

@grammargirl@zirk.us No, I find it hard to fathom YT will push low-effort/static image videos to people.

@lizcovart@historians.social @grammargirl@zirk.us Yeah, if your hosting service auto generates and publishes videos, sure. Do it. But beyond Libsyn, I’m not sure many others do.

@grammargirl@zirk.us And here’s what YT makes: https://youtube.com/@TheEndUpdatesI’ve never created or uploaded a video for that channel. Every video is from the connected RSS feed for that show.

@evoterra Yeah, that's pretty dull. We also upload professionally edited subtitles, which I imagine you don't get with an auto-upload. What we do is much nicer, but it also — no surprise — takes more time.

@grammargirl@zirk.us @lizcovart@historians.social I wouldn’t worry about marrying stats. YT video stats are mostly vanity metrics when it comes to these kinds of videos. Maybe it’s not apples and oranges, but it is probably lemons and oranges. I’ve yet to see an interesting way to merge the two. The audiences and listener/watcher experience and dynamic are just too different. And I further think that YT will learn that as well, pulling the plug on this in the next 18 months. Or just abandoning it, as is Google’s wont. Or the lean all the way in and give us tools to make interesting videos without being video creators. Which I find unlikely.

@grammargirl @evoterra @lexfri @leo @tomwebster Personally, I would:a) turn on RSS import, so you have your RSS feed being polled by YouTube automaticallyb) if you have a nice video episode instead, upload that yourself and make the RSS version "private" so people don't see it.The auto-RSS ingest seems to work well, and given the very low amount of YouTube podcasting use, is the best use of your time; but then to add video shows makes sense to me.

@james @evoterra @lexfri @leo @tomwebster Thanks for the thoughtful response, James! It's an interesting idea to use RSS as the baseline and add better videos when we have time. It occurred to me that it's funny that I'm worried about being penalized in the algorithm for uploading nicer videos than people would get using their automated solution.

@james @grammargirl @evoterra @leo @tomwebster My answer is close to James’s. But in many cases I think letting YouTube ingest your rss feed is better for YouTube than you. I’d often rather have great videos that promote my actual, monetized podcast, vs pushing some listeners to an under-monetized YouTube presence.

@lexfri @james @evoterra @leo @tomwebster Thanks, Lex! After all our work, we still only make ~$40 per month from YouTube. It's completely not worth the time unless you view it as a marketing tool, which still makes me lean toward providing the nicer videos (unless it seems like nicer videos mean you get seen less often because you aren't using the tool they want to promote).
