       I was today years old when I learned that the State of Virginia is home to a National Wildlife Refuge called the "Great Dismal Swamp" https://www.fws.gov/refuge/great-dismal-swamp / https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Dismal_Swamp_National_Wildlife_Refuge(A swamp I now very much want to visit)

       @simon My family has visited several times on vacation. It's a lovely area, great for birdwatching. Its history, especially with regard to escaped enslaved people, is fascinating. It is great, but not dismal.

       @simon transited it by boat once. It’s quite amazing. And not too dismal. Further. There’s a mysterious lake in the middle that’s — somehow — barely above sea level and provides freshwater that makes it a proper swamp.
