ever since getting into riichi, I’ve had the idea that the best way to teach a novice is to start with Literally Just Build A Closed Hand, then hand them the yaku infographic and say “you know those pon and chi buttons? they are how you enable expert hand building mode. have fun”so far, this seems to be working, got at least one person from a kart-adjacent friend group hooked. now to see if it generalizes(play SEGA Net Mahjong MJ for PC/Android/iOS)

@aj oh man starting out in riichi it felt like the pon and chi buttons were 100% a trap. Now that i know a little i can tell that i was completely right about that, but at least it's a trap i can walk out of some of the timeIt's so much easier to win a hand if you have the riichi point on your side though

@Muffinlord the courage to clap my novice friends on the shoulder, look them dead in the eye, and tell them “brother, that call was straight ass, your only hope is fishing for half flush”but people LOVE pushing the call buttons because it makes exciting things happen, so you want to empower them to do that! they just, uh, also need to learn the game eventually LOL

@aj some friends in real life had been teaching people to play even more gradually, first just playing with everyone having their hand visible to demostrate how to even build a hand, then gradually introducing the various yaku and the pon and chi and kan. Think they've got at least 2-3 people like that..

@mut i dig open-hand games, it seems like that sort of thing has gone pretty well in vrchat—putting newbies against each other and then just answering questions makes for a pretty fun environment. love cheering on dogshit houtei-nomi hands because IT’S A HAND, YOU DID IT

@aj i’d initially been taught to just get tanyao or toitoi if i opened my hand, and that kind of sticked, they’re really easy to teach. My skill level is dogshit though for all it counts, and i also got burned by some of my friends switching to only playing mahjong every single day instead of like board games or whatever and me playing too much with them because of that until it just became not fun anymore
