thinking about switching my main desktop computer to linux in january. im going to write a long series of extremely detailed blow-by-blow posts about it, where i whine about all the specific things that don't work, and people will respond to them telling me that i don't need those specific things and it's weird that i would even want them

today i've spent 7 hours installing linux on my main computer. admittedly the real reason it's taking so long is that i'm keeping an extremely exhaustive log of the whole process which is now up to 5500 words in length and counting. will publish it eventually to torture the nerds

have you ever done the exercise of writing down every little detail about what's wrong with something, as you do it? you'll notice so much stuff. like, for example, the BIOS menu in my computer basically doesn't work correctly. selecting dropdown options selects the wrong option. and when you make changes and save and exit, it says "you have not made any changes", even though you have. if you look closely, everything on computers is like this, so don't look closely please, that's my advice

the end result of this year's attempt to try out linux on my main desktop machine, by the way? is that there aren't any drivers for my audio interface rack unit, so i won't be able to record or play audio at all. i even got out my box of unused old audio interfaces, like i'm sure everyone has. the tascam 16-channel? no drivers. the mackie? nope. the presonus? nope! the smaller, worse presonus? no drivers! the m-audio? no drivers for it!! no audio on linux for me! the end

everyone tells me that linux has drivers for stuff now but i even had to go through three different usb wi-fi adaptors before i got one that worked, and of course it was the extremely slow, shitty one. what fuckin year is this! after all my surprisingly good linux experiences the last couple of days has been extremely disappointing. hang your heads in shame nerds. year of linux on desktop? has been postponed

i've been using mx linux on two different laptops for a year now. and you know what? for the first time, i've gone a full year without a package update breaking anything. never experienced that before on linux in 15 years. incredible. actually scratch that, i spent like a whole day trying to get smb shares to mount and then it stopped working again a month later for no reason. but other than that, its been ok. i can recommend it i suppose. i can recommend that specific linux but not the others
