It's kinda bizarre that there are still Confederate monuments and memorials in the US that still need to be taken down :amaze: No matter the reason, it simply takes WAAY to longStatues of "people" who fought to keep slaves is so incredibly badOfc history should be taught so future generations don't have to repeat the terribly stupid mistakes of the past but do not honor them!We can't change what our ancestors did in the past but we can change how we remember and judge them now

@stux One of those odd perks about Americans vs Germans.Germany didn't see the value in keeping up statues of Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich, whereas Americans basically reveled in their imagery of the antebellum South.Don't worry, I fully expect the glorification of Donald Trump and history to be rewritten where January 6th was his Holy Day of Unification.

@stux Not well known outside America, but the vast majority are less than a century old, put up a generation and a half, or even later, after the union won the civil war. They weren't put up by the Confederacy. They were put up by locals generations later during the civil rights eras, primarily a forward-thinking group called the Daughters of the Confederacy. The idea was to keep the idea alive for future generations, propaganda for the future, exactly as it happened.

@stux Germany and Denmark both had female Prime Ministers, but as of 2024, the United States is no closer to knowing a woman as President.Obama was a fluke, I almost doubt we'll see another minority as President in my lifetime.The United States is basically the "spoiled rich kid with toys" of the world. Between our politicians, international politics, military, and "cultural exports", the United States is the "brat of the world."

@stuxI don't disagree with you but you should start closer to home. There are 24 statues and busts of Leopold II spread around Europe, mostly Belgium and Amsterdam it looks like. Six were removed in 2020 leaving a total of 18 remaining. He was the absolute ruler and enslaver of the Congo from 1885-1908.All of our countries have dark histories and skeletons in the closet. Maybe they should all be removed, not just in America but Europe too?
