@mikemathia I should add that Noelle-Neumann developed this theory in an attempt to explain why the conservative party (with which she sympathized) had lost the election (again). And her explanation was basically that conservatives are too cowardly to speak up when the wind isn't in their back. So take this theory with ..um.. a grain of salt.
