As if I didn't have enough to do with ornery critters to care for, despite their constant efforts to do themselves harm, and me, the wife insisted we add an additional source of easy, good, and cheap protein to the farm store and our table. Meat sheep. We just had our first ewe born. Each ewe can birth two lambs a year, nearly full grown in 6 months at little cost. I can cotton to this quickly. They eat a small fraction of what my cattle eat.. And, when the rams butt you it's just annoying..

@SonofGrace when it comes to meat that will eat just about anything, I'm more of a goat guy myself, but a lamb will do too in a pinch, so... Approved! 😂

@SonofGrace way to go! I grew up on a sheep farm, your children are having a great experience. What breed are you raising? We raised Montadales. I hope to install a small flock, but will likely be another year or two before I can rally.

@Henhouse_Cockerel My children love growing up with critters. They're not so crazy about it a chore time, but as they get older they are beginning to appreciate the work as well. Like it's supposed to be.We are mixing Katahdin and Barbados Black Belly. We're following the lead of a friend that has been doing sheep husbandry for decades.

@NoAgendaMO Kinda wish I'd done this sooner. Sooner than cattle even.

@ThatCrazyDude My wife has some Greek kin so we'd have lamb, feta cheese, and olives for Christmas and Easter dinner until they passed. That was new for me, but very pleasing. I never thought I'd be raising sheep though. My granddaddy, once president of his state's Cattlemen's Association, is rolling in his grave.

@SonofGrace they will enjoy the chores more and more as responsibility, accountability and credit for a job well done begin to have value for them. I admit I did not like doing chores at first (especially pen cleaning post de-worming) but I came to and believe it has had life long positive impact.
