I, too, am a child of the 80s. Back in the good old days, you had to show ID, go into a physical store, look some creep in the eye and tell him you wanted Anal Intruders 12. And it was actually really expensive to buy porn. I'm pretty sure most people rented it from video stores, which is somehow even creepier because the 19 year old dork behind the counter now knows what kind of porn you're into.

There were reputable video-stores that would require a person to ask to view 'the book' to obtain access to the hidden-section of the store. There was no open access. A person had to know exactly how to ask to view the material and be mildly OK with the person on the other side of the counter.

@TASOWN A law was passed making revealing video rental records a crime after Robert Bork's porno favorites were leaked by his local video store. Last I heard that law remains on the books to this day.Oh, and the GOP was behind that bill, which reassured coomsumers that their secrets were safe and they could keep renting hardcore tapes from their local mom & pop VHS emporium. Other than in Utah and a few other places that kept prosecuting obscenity based on community standards by 1985 porn was easily available and you didn't even have to visit a sleazy porno shop, though you did have to brave the 'porno section' which was usually in a different room.If you were a kid they'd yell at you if you tried to check out the extra tapes. I mean, who knows, maybe they have an extra copy of Return of the Jedi stashed back there!
